Department Summary The Office of Admissions includes over 50 staff who are engaged in the work of recruitment and outreach to prospective undergraduates, and making admission decisions on all applicants for freshman, transfer, and post-baccalaureate undergraduate admission. Admissions is a unit of the Division of Student Services & Enrollment Management and works closely with several other units of that division, especially Scholarships/Financial Aid and Orientation, as well as many other parts of campus.
Within Admissions, the recruitment & outreach team that includes this position is a dynamic, committed group of professionals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives who are often the first UO representatives that thousands of students per year from around the US and beyond will meet in the process of choosing whether to apply to and ultimately attend, the University of Oregon.
Position Summary As a member of the Student Services & Enrollment Management team, the Admissions Counselor Intern is responsible for representing the University of Oregon (UO) to multiple constituencies, including prospective students, their families, and school/community contacts with guidance from the supervisor and counselor team. Like all other counselors on the team, the Counselor Intern independently develops and implements recruiting initiatives to meet application and enrollment goals, and also conducts a holistic review of freshman applications for their assigned territory, and others as assigned.
The Counselor Intern will plan recruitment strategies including high school visits and individual meetings with guidance from their direct supervisor. Will participate in extensive training related to the UO, admissions counseling, application review, and territory management.
Additionally, this position is a front-line service provider with primary responsibility for student admission counseling, recruitment travel, and management of the assigned geographic areas. The position requires a significant level of independent judgment and autonomy in regard to work planning; representation of the university to thousands of students, families, counselors, and other key staff at secondary schools and community colleges; counseling of students and families; and application of university admission policy through holistic admission review.
Additional Expectations of the Position This position requires an extensive amount of travel, often including locations that are not serviced by public transportation.
This position must be able to work irregular hours and travel extensively on nights and weekends.
This position will require a valid driver's license and the ability to obtain UO Driver Certification.
This position is a full-time appointment that runs for one fiscal/academic year only and is not renewable or repeatable.
Minimum Requirements Bachelor's degree from the UO awarded within the last two years or 30 days of hire.
Prior experience representing the UO as a current student (Ambassador, Student Orientation Staff, etc.) or as a student leader in a paid or unpaid role.
Professional Competencies Excellent public speaking and presentation skills.
Ease in using technology for communication, record keeping, and management of data.
Self-motivated and demonstrated ability to function independently from a remote location.
Ability to work in a collaborative and effective manner with students, alumni, diverse families, administrators, and faculty.
Ability to work and communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Ability to relate with prospective students via positive personal experiences from the student and campus community angles.
Preferred Qualifications Experience with multicultural recruitment or outreach programming.
Interest in longer-term connections to admissions or other aspects of student affairs and enrollment management, whether as a profession or for graduate study.
Familiarity with the UO's undergraduate student recruitment efforts.
Proficiency or fluency in another language, such as Spanish.
