This is a management and leadership position which organizes, manages and directs all activities of the City's Animal Services Division.
This position is responsible for the operation of the Regional Animal Shelter which encompasses housing and caring for incoming stray and unwanted animals, adoptions, public education, transfers, recovery of owned animals, and spay and neuter programs.
The ultimate goal is to drive the shelter forward with its goal of increasing the live release rate for the shelter animals as well as nurture an animal welfare culture within the City of Farmington and San Juan County.
This position works independently and, in a team setting, exercising considerable judgment and initiative.
Finally, this position interfaces directly and frequently with Parks and Recreation staff, community organizations, vendors, media, and the general public.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES Leads and directs all aspects of the Animal Services division including supervision and management of employees, customer service, public relations, finance, regulation and compliance, and shelter operations. Oversees the recruitment, evaluation, and discipline of all animal shelter employees. Oversees the overall health and wellness of all the animals housed at the shelter. Maintains an overall smooth flow of animals through the shelter system. Creates reports as needed and analyzes data to highlight gaps and effectiveness of programs. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public. Acts as a liaison between Farmington Regional Animal Shelter, the Farmington Police Department, and Animal Control Officers. Oversees euthanasia program and performs euthanasia of animals by injection. Oversees the control of controlled drugs in the shelter and the sterilization clinic. Responds to media and public inquiries regarding animal services. Acts as a city representative to the Regional Animal Shelter Foundation and the PRCA Commission. Assists in departmental projects and events when necessary. QUALIFICATIONS This position is subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace Policy which includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.
Graduation from a college or university with a bachelor's degree in animal science, or a closely related field and six (6) years increasingly responsible experience in animal welfare, facility management, and employee supervision, or any equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record for the past three years.
Ability to cope emotionally with the euthanasia of large numbers of healthy, unwanted animals daily.
Thorough knowledge of animal control ordinance/procedures and animal shelter operations.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Extensive background check required.
This position has the responsibility to participate in and comply with the City's Environmental, Health, and Safety program.
