The Assistant Summer Camp Director works closely with the Summer Camp Director to provide year-round leadership to the summer camp operations and March Break Camp, ensuring program delivery aligns with the guiding principles of the camp, the YMCA's Camping Quality Recommended Practices (CQRP), and Ontario Camping Association (OCA) standards. This position is responsible for all program areas of camp, including recruiting and hiring seasonal staff, maintaining program supply inventory, developing risk management and training plans with the Camp Director, and collaborating with our customer service and marketing teams to provide parents with high-quality customer service and effective communication. In the summer months, the Assistant Camp Director will directly supervise the Program Coordinator and Day Camp Director, and may have additional direct reports. In the absence of the Camp Director, they will act as their designate.
In this role, you will:
Collaborate with the Summer Camp Director and Full-Time Staff of the camp to ensure alignment with guiding principles, YMCA initiatives, and OCA standards. Act as the lead operational designate when the Director is absent.
Support and supervise the Program Coordinator, Day Camp Director, and other supervisory team members in the summer, acting as a positive leader amongst the entire staff team.
Create and maintain a positive camp culture, continually looking at all aspects of camp through a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens, striving to make it a place where everyone feels a sense of belonging.
Provide high-quality customer service; work closely with customer service and marketing teams to enhance our customer service and respond to parent feedback.
Ensure all camp areas are proactive in health and safety, with risk management plans in place and all audit requirements met.
Organize and support the recruitment process and hiring of all seasonal staff, keeping accurate tracking and records of all HR files for seasonal staff.
Ensure that all program-related expenses align with budget requirements and that all administrative tasks related to purchasing are completed accurately and on time.
Contribute to the overall Camp Pine Crest Master Plan through participation on camp alumni committees, attending YMCA events, camp committees, and open houses, and actively cultivating donors.
Actively promote Pine Crest programs to the local community through local events on and off-site, local schools, and the YMCA.
Perform other duties as assigned.
You bring:
Post-Secondary Education in outdoor education or a related field, or equivalent experience.
Certifications including Standard First Aid and CPR, National Lifesaving Society (NLS), Challenge Course Level 2 Facilitator (preferred), and Wilderness First Responder (preferred).
Minimum of 3 years experience in overnight or day camps, outdoor education, or recreational programming environments.
Experience supervising staff (preferred).
Well-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills; ability to establish rapport and communicate effectively with campers, participants, volunteers, and staff.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Well-developed organizational skills and attention to detail.
Effective leadership skills, with a demonstrated ability to encourage and motivate staff and volunteers, acknowledging and appreciating contributions.
Flexibility regarding assigned hours of work, including early mornings, days, evenings, and weekends.
Must live on-site at YMCA Camp Pine Crest, year-round in Torrance.
Excellent understanding of diversity, inclusion, and equity, including the ability to identify and address barriers, work effectively with diverse stakeholders, and integrate equity into program design.
