The Department of Biology at Lincoln Memorial University invites applications for the position of full-time Assistant Professor of Biology to begin August 2025. The position serves the undergraduate program on the Harrogate, TN campus. LMU is nestled in the unique Cumberland Gap region where Tennessee meets Kentucky and Virginia. The university is dedicated to serving the Appalachia region with a student population representing the diversity of the region and beyond.
The successful candidate will have experience and expertise in Molecular Cell Biology and Immunology as represented by a terminal degree (PhD) in Biology, Molecular Cell Biology, Cellular Biology, Immunology, or an allied field. Primary teaching responsibilities may include Immunology (BIOL360), Molecular Cell Biology (BIOL450), and other courses based on the candidate's expertise in support of the Biology curriculum. The faculty member will have the primary responsibility (~80% of time) of teaching. The courses serve a variety of students including biology pre-health and pre-vet majors. Other responsibilities will be in scholarship and service in support of the University, College, and Department missions. Scholarship will be based on the faculty member's area of interest and support undergraduate research through mentorship. To ensure a smooth transition into our academic community, the successful candidate will participate in LMU's New Faculty Academy. Additionally, during their first year, the new faculty member will enjoy moderated scholarship and service expectations while receiving guidance and support from a faculty mentor assigned by the department.
Required QualificationsTerminal degree (PhD) in Biology, Molecular Cell Biology, Cellular Biology, Immunology, or an allied field.Educational preparation in accordance with requirements of the University and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.Evidence of potential for effective teaching and scholarly activity.Preferred QualificationsExperience teaching cell biology and/or immunology at the college level.Job DutiesUndertake the standard "Instructional/Research/Service Workload" as outlined in the LMU Employee Handbook.Provide course and classroom conduct as outlined in the LMU Employee Handbook.Comply with the LMU Employee Handbook.Assist the department chair with effective development and implementation of the department's Student Recruitment and Retention Plan.Assist department chair in the development, implementation and monitoring of the Long-Range Strategic Plan and Outcomes Assessment Plan for the assigned program/department.Support and promote the university's SEWS and Transparent Instruction programs within the curriculum.Assist the department chair with necessary department, school or university reports/schedules as requested.Demonstrate current knowledge of discipline content and assist the department chair with curricular revisions and changes as requested.Appropriately align course syllabi goals and objectives to academic major program goals and student outcomes for each course taught.Develop a current syllabus for each assigned class and distribute a course syllabus to each student.Submit a current copy of each syllabus to the department chair by a predetermined deadline.Evaluate enrolled students and submit grades to the Registrar by a predetermined deadline.Requisition instructional materials and supplies through the department chair.Assure completion of the student course evaluation instrument for the semester as requested.Participate in the faculty evaluation process and use the results to improve teaching and strengthen the major.Establish and maintain the resources of the academic department, the school, and the University.Submit to department chair his/her semester schedule that indicates weekly teaching assignment, office/conference hours and involvement in university, school and department councils or committees.Effectively advise assigned students in an individualized educational plan for their program of study and maintain an accurate and current academic file for each advisee.Explore career goals with each assigned advisee.Mentor majors through the research process.Fulfill the university's scholarship expectation through research, publication, grant development, and creative achievement.Participate in events that support the institution, the faculty, staff and students.Participate in commencement exercises.Participate in community and public service opportunities.Attend department, school, convocation, and university faculty meetings.Promote the mission of Lincoln Memorial University to all faculty, staff, students, and to the community at large.Promote effective working relationships among faculty, staff, and students.Participate on university committees.Maintain proper security for all University files and information and follow privacy procedures at all times.Maintain records and procedures for duties and responsibilities of position.Complete required institutional, program accreditation, and other reports necessary for the advancement of University programs, both on campus and at extended campus sites.Perform other duties as assigned.Posting Number: F01359P
