The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is currently hiring for a Research Scientist Supervisor II (Epidemiology/Biostatistics) within our Center for Infectious Diseases (CID) Division of Communicable Disease Control (DCDC). In this role, you will serve as the California Reportable Disease Information Exchange (CalREDIE) Surveillance Section Chief. CalREDIE is the statewide surveillance system for infectious diseases, outbreaks, and emergencies.
The CID protects the people in California from the threat of preventable infectious diseases and assists those living with an infectious disease in securing prompt and appropriate access to healthcare, medications, and associated support services. The DCDC works to promptly identify, prevent, and control infectious diseases that pose a threat to public health, including emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, vaccine-preventable agents, bacterial toxins, bioterrorism, and pandemics.

Responsibilities:
Coordinate and direct the development of plans, operational procedures, guidelines, recommendations, and education/trainings to improve the data received through internal systems for communicable disease surveillance.
Define the priorities for each Unit/Team within the CalREDIE Surveillance Section; supervise staff activities and their efforts; and organize long-term projects to improve data quality and completeness using continuous quality improvement principles.
Conduct the planning and implementation (e.g., study design, data collection, and analysis) and reporting of epidemiologic studies related to communicable diseases.
Recruit, interview, and select staff; train and guide staff to ensure that program mandates are met; conduct employee evaluations and counseling, as appropriate; and convene program staff meetings.
In close collaboration with the Chief of CalREDIE Stakeholder Support Section and Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) staff, oversee, direct, and coordinate activities to enhance and evaluate the laboratory and electronic case report data received electronically through internal systems for communicable disease surveillance.
Work closely with internal and external stakeholders including, but not limited to, the Informatics Branch and Health Care Organizations, such as the Office of AIDS, ITSD, the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, Local Health Departments, and Health Information Exchanges/Organizations to address surveillance issues (e.g., legal and security requirements to improve the timeliness and efficiency of electronic surveillance activities).
Job Requirements:
Five years of progressively responsible research experience in the stated specialty or a closely related field. This experience must have included major responsibility for the design, conduct, and analysis of a large or highly complex and difficult research, and experience in the development, planning, and operation of multidisciplinary, complex, and difficult research program involving coordination of several groups of disciplines, recruitment and training of personnel, budgeting and accounting of funds, and preparation of major reports and scientific publications. At least three years of this experience must be at a level of responsibility equivalent to that of a Research Scientist Supervisor I, AND Education: Possession of a doctoral degree in the stated specialty or in a closely related field.
OR
Five years of progressively responsible professional research experience in a field of medical specialization relevant to the stated specialty or a closely related field. This experience must have included major responsibility for the design, conduct, and analysis of complex research, or responsibility for the administration and coordination of large, complex multidisciplinary, or multi-institutional research programs. Two years of approved residency in a medical specialty relevant to the class title may be substituted for one year of the required experience. At least three years of this experience must be at a level of responsibility equivalent to that of a Research Scientist Supervisor I, AND Education: Possession of the degree of Doctor of Medicine.
