The Georgia State University (GSU) Division of Animal Resources welcomes applicants for the position of University Veterinarian and Director of the Division of Animal Resources (DAR). The DAR is responsible for the daily operations and management of several animal facilities that support Georgia State's psychology, neuroscience, biology, biomedical, and health professional programs in accordance with applicable regulations, guidelines, and institutional policies. Georgia State's AAALAC accredited animal care program comprises approximately 50,000 sq. ft. of animal housing and support space in six buildings on two campuses for a wide variety of species that include rodents, small animals, non-human primates, and aquatic species.
This individual serves as one of two veterinarians associated with the program and reports to the Vice President of Research & Economic Development (the Institutional Official). The University Veterinarian and Director of DAR is a key member of the University Research Services & Administration's senior leadership team and is integral to supporting the university's rapidly growing life and health science portfolio. One particular area of growth has concerned infectious disease research to include an expansion of high containment (ABSL3) facilities and activities.
Key Position Responsibilities: Provide leadership as the University Veterinarian. Provide leadership of the Division of Animal Resources Serve as a voting member of the Georgia State Institutional Animal Care Committee (IACUC) as the designated Attending Veterinarian. Conduct veterinary consultations for IACUC protocols and research initiatives Provide oversight and provision of high-quality veterinary medical and surgical care to a wide array of laboratory animal species (nonhuman primates, rodents, ferrets, etc.) to include shared after-hours, weekends, and holiday responsibilities Work with the Institutional Official, IACUC, Institutional Biosafety Committee, Research & Environmental Safety, and others to ensure the highest quality of care and compliance. Assist with compliance efforts (e.g. USDA inspections, AAALAC Program Description preparation and site visits, etc.) Perform other related duties as needed Leadership of the University's Animal Research Program, 40%
As the University Veterinarian, provides leadership to the university's animal research programs ensuring that they are aligned with current research strategies, managed at the highest levels of professional standards, and meet or exceed current regulatory requirements, including USDA-APHIS and OLAW. Provides leadership to maintain and expand AAALAC accreditation, collaborating with stakeholders across the university to meet accreditation standards. Provides recommendations on procurement of equipment and facility renovation or expansion. Provides the Office of Research Integrity Assurance (ORIA) with data, documentation, and other information as needed for annual reports to federal regulatory agencies.

Manages and directs the administrative, veterinary, and animal husbandry units of the DAR that employs approximately twenty-five staff including two full-time veterinarians. Provides management oversight of the multiple vivarium facilities, as well as preparing and managing financial and human resources. Oversees the process of establishing usage fees, billing, and collections for the use of the university's animal facilities. Reviews and assesses per diem rates. Provides leadership to veterinary staff, animal care staff, and others to appropriately monitor animal health, oversee disease surveillance and preventative medicine programs, and promote animal biosecurity. Actively engages in ensuring the provision of high-quality veterinary medical care. Provides leadership in developing and updating guidance documents. Seeks opportunities to enhance and grow customer support provided to investigators and research personnel conducting a wide variety of animal-based research activities across numerous colleges, departments, centers, and institutes. Supports advancement of the university's animal care program to strategically align with and support growing research and teaching endeavors.
Support to faculty and researchers, 20%
Provides information and assistance to the research and teaching community at Georgia State to ensure animal protocols meet established standards and offers suggestions on improved techniques that may impact research program effectiveness. Serve as an ex officio voting member of the Georgia State Institutional Animal Care Committee (IACUC) as the designated Attending Veterinarian.

Hiring Qualifications Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or a Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD) degree and three years of animal clinic experience, or a combination of education and experience. Must possess a valid license or be license eligible to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Georgia.
Preferred Hiring Qualifications Significant relevant experience in managing a laboratory animal resources program; Prior experience working as a veterinarian in a university environment; ACLAM diplomate status; Significant knowledge of the regulatory and compliance environment; Veterinary medical and surgical experience with a variety of laboratory animal species to include nonhuman primates, rodents, ferrets as well as having experience in high containment research; Familiarity with managing operations in an ABSL3 facility; Previous IACUC experience; familiarity with the AAALAC accreditation process; demonstrated success in working as part of a team and with diverse populations. A veterinary medical degree from an AVMA accredited veterinary college or ECFVG certification and 5 years of related experience. Veterinary licensure in at least one of the United States. Experience with the supervision, development, and performance management of veterinary and other professional staff. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills. Licensure in Georgia and DEA licensure is expected within 12 months of hire.
