Primary Function

The Director of Public Affairs directs the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits' (The Center) public policy and public relations needs through implementation of a comprehensive system of message objectives to position The Center and its staff as a statewide thought leader in nonprofit management. This role is responsible for telling our story to the public, media, policy makers, and other constituents.

Essential Functions

Community Relations

Speak or arrange for speakers on behalf of OKCNP and its programs throughout the state.

Act as a liaison to other community groups, civic organizations, and policy makers on behalf of OKCNP.

Research and write articles, briefs, news releases, newsletters, speeches, scripts, and other publications.

Public Policy

Assist the President & CEO and contract lobbyist with communications for various public policy and lobbying alerts prepared by OKCNP.

Act as an official advocacy and public policy liaison with nonprofit members and other stakeholders.

Act as one of the staff liaisons with the National Council of Nonprofits and other policy organizations.

Organize policy-related convenings and trainings.

Research, prepare, and disseminate as necessary sector-related data and information through various channels.

Assist the President & CEO in preparation of reports as needed.

Oversee the annual Advocacy Day at the Capitol for nonprofits.

Oversee and moderate the biweekly Advocacy Roundtable during legislative session.

Assist the President & CEO, lobbyist, and Board of Directors in creating strategy and policy platforms and their implementation.

Media Relations

Act as chief gatekeeper of information available to media representatives.

Act as an organizational spokesperson with the media.

Prepare and pitch story ideas to various media channels about the nonprofit sector, OKCNP programs and events, or other stories as necessary.

Monitor news outlets for opportunities to promote OKCNP.

Administration and Other Duties

Help to develop an annual media and communications plan in partnership with the Senior Director of Marketing according to the OKCNP strategic plan.

Provide reports as requested by the President & CEO, Board of Directors, and committees.

Provide guidance and expertise to nonprofits through helplines, informal consultation, training and consulting projects, community events, and other channels as needed.

Maintain professionalism, organizational standards, and confidentiality as a representative of OKCNP to all donors, members, and other key stakeholders.

Valuable Member of OKCNP Team

Contributes to the growing, diverse culture at the Center and works alongside the staff to problem-solve, strategize, create goals, monitor progress, and build relationships.

Acts as an integral part of the overall success of the Center and delivery of the strategic plan.

Creates a "can-do" attitude around new initiatives and expansion opportunities that take the Center's programs and resources across the state, especially as it relates to on-line learning and uses of technology in instruction.

Ability to work independently, and as part of the team, balancing autonomy and team-integration.

Work inter-departmentally with communications, marketing, external affairs, and administration.

Provide data dashboards to board and staff and assist with making data-based decisions.

Represents Center's values in working with clients and colleagues.

Other Functions

Other duties may be assigned by the President & CEO and/or the Senior Director of Marketing.

Ability to travel throughout the state and outside of Oklahoma as needed.

Engage in professional development activities such as training, conferences, research, and coaching.

Participate in OKCNP's special events, including ONE and Visions, and board meetings as requested.

Provide general administrative functions such as expense reporting, budget oversight, consultation with other team members, and attendance at scheduled meetings.

Maintain the strictest of confidentiality at all times.

Requirements

Education and Expertise

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in journalism, marketing, public relations, or advertising. In lieu of a degree, job experience will be accepted with the approval of the President and CEO.

Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), project management software, and public speaking.

Experience with Asana, Adobe Creative Cloud, Photography, and Video Production preferred.

Exceptional communication skills (verbal, written, presentation).

Possess a minimum of 3-5 years as a PR, communications, and/or policy professional.

Exceptional written and oral communication skills, including the ability to deliver presentations and regular speeches.

Project management, event management experience preferred.

Some general experience working with nonprofits, programs, fundraising, and media relations.

Superior command of technology.

Reports to

Senior Director of Marketing. Duties related to Public Policy will be assigned by the President & CEO.

Supervises

Contract Lobbyist.

Volunteers and Interns (paid and unpaid).
