As a

Laboratory Safety Specialist

at Georgetown University, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and compliance of laboratory operations across the campus. You will be responsible for implementing and maintaining comprehensive safety programs that adhere to regulatory standards and university policies. This position reports to the Sr. Laboratory and Biological Safety Manager and collaborates closely with faculty, researchers, and staff to promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement in laboratory practices. The Laboratory Safety Specialist is responsible for providing technical guidance, training, inspections, and program improvement in support of the University-wide laboratory safety programs to ensure a safe research environment. This will involve direction from a variety of safety professionals on campus. The programs which are of concern for laboratory safety include, but are not limited to: laboratory safety, hazard communication, laboratory inspections, hazardous waste management, and training programs. Additional duties include but are not limited to:

Conduct annual inspections and audits of laboratories to assess compliance with safety regulations and university policies.
Perform administrative duties associated with inspection performance including scheduling, computer data entry of resulting information, report writing, and transportation to and from the setting.
Deliver safety training programs for faculty, students, and staff involved in laboratory activities, maintaining records of safety inspections, training sessions, incidents, and corrective actions.
Assist researchers and research staff with developing and writing Standard Operating Procedures for the use of particularly hazardous substances.
Establish and implement research program specific processes and controls, staying updated on relevant regulations, standards, and best practices in laboratory safety.
Collaborate with the Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) office and other relevant departments to coordinate safety initiatives and respond to emergencies.
Advise on the selection and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety equipment.
Assist in updating applicable internal documents, maintaining database information relating to laboratory safety.
Maintain and update lab safety handouts, reference materials, web page content, and supplies.
Assist with the implementation of the University chemical inventory system, and other duties as assigned.

Work Interactions

Reporting to the Senior Laboratory Health and Biosafety Manager, the position coordinates with all EH&S staff members, Medical Center Operations, and Facilities Management. Verbal and written communication are important for the position to ensure that corrective measures are adequately applied. The incumbent must interface with students, staff, administrators, faculty, visitors, and vendors to ensure compliance with NFPA, OSHA and other safety regulations.

Requirements And Qualifications

Bachelor's degree, preferably in chemistry, biochemistry, engineering, natural sciences, environmental and occupational health sciences, or public health
Minimum of three years of accumulated professional experience
Thorough understanding and knowledge of laboratory safety regulations, funding agency requirements, and University policy
Ability to interpret, apply, and assess compliance for numerous complex and technical regulations for laboratories
Strong understanding of hazard and risk assessment, and risk communication
Demonstrated ability to provide judgment, innovation, and advanced technical expertise in applying regulations and best practices to a diverse collection of research and teaching spaces
The ability to regularly exercise independent decision-making, technical expertise and judgment on program development, direction, and client service delivery for complex laboratory safety issues, with minimal supervision

Pay Range

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$47,586.00 - $87,558.13

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
