Position Purpose The Equipment Electrician maintains equipment assigned to the Equipment Department. Individuals in this occupation can be called upon to perform other duties in cases of emergency. Equipment Electrician position may be assigned other tasks requiring equal or less skill. This is a journeyman position. After initial orientation and guidance, individuals are expected to perform job duties independently and applicants are expected to fully meet the qualifications listed below, and will be fully responsible for the correct completion of the work assigned. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Performs preventive maintenance, routine inspection, periodical inspection, diagnoses electrical equipment and makes appropriate repairs. Performs inbound/outbound traction motor inspections and periodic maintenance including cleaning of motors, electrical isolation testing and brush replacement. Inspect, maintain and clean 37.5vdc battery sets and auxiliary power supply units. Inspects, crimps/solders/brazes and replaces 600VDC power cables, ground cables, and fuses. Performs on-car modifications which include point-to-point wiring and use of crimping tools. The individual for this position assists in maintaining a safe and secure work environment by participating in required training, recognizing and reporting hazards and suspicious activity, and using all required personal protective equipment. Performs other related duties as assigned. Physical Requirements The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must occasionally walk, stoop, bend, crawl, ascend/descend stairs, steps and ladders, etc. The employee must support and position components that weigh up to one hundred and forty (140) pounds without assistance. The employee must possess the manual dexterity to disassemble, assemble and install small components. The employee must possess visual acuity to identify and differentiate small parts as well as the ability to avoid workplace obstacles. The individual must have the ability to detect audible warnings in a rail car maintenance shop environment. The employee must have the ability to climb up and down a rung ladder and also to climb up and down transit car(s) with a step height of as much as three (3) feet and lift leg(s) a height of twenty-four (24) inches to clear third rail by stepping over same. The employee must have normal day and night time vision, corrected or uncorrected, be without color blindness and have normal hearing, with or without device. The employee must be able to withstand heights of over one hundred and fifty (150) feet. The individual must have the ability to climb a rung ladder. The position requires the incumbent to be able to walk, stoop, bend, crawl, ascend/descend stairs, steps, and ladders, etc.
Working Conditions The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The duties and responsibilities of this position are usually performed inside in general lighting, heating and ventilation. Cleaning work is performed outside in prevailing climate conditions. Protective clothing, eye protection, hearing protection, dust masks and respirators are provided to protect against chemical splashing, airborne debris, toxic fumes, and sustained loud or high pitch noise that are encountered in maintenance shops. Incumbent must be capable of using any of this protective equipment. Occasionally, work must be performed in rail storage yards, along active railroad rights of way, on bridges and in subways. When working on equipment, work space can be confined and the use of flashlights or other supplemental lighting may be required. Ladders and/or work platforms will be required to access certain equipment. PATCO operates electrically propelled rail cars. All employees must be constantly aware of the hazards that cause electric shock and electrical flash burns.
