A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A FEDERAL GOVERNMENT BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST The Federal Government Business Development Specialist position is responsible for identifying, pursuing and securing business/construction opportunities within federal government agencies. This role involves strategic planning, market research, proposal development and relationship management to expand the company's presence and contracts with federal entities.
Key Responsibilities: Market Analysis and Strategy Development: Conduct comprehensive market research to identify potential federal business opportunities. Analyze federal procurement trends and provide insights to support strategic planning. Develop and implement business development strategies to achieve growth targets. Develop competitor SWOT analysis and insights. Coordinate with Director of Marketing to develop a marketing and business development strategy focused on capturing direct award work. Opportunity Identification and Pursuit: Identify and evaluate potential federal contract opportunities. Track and respond to relevant Requests for Information (RFIs), Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and other solicitation documents. Develop and maintain a pipeline of prospective federal business opportunities. Customer and Proposal Development: Lead the proposal development process, including writing, editing and submission of high-quality proposals. Coordinate with cross-functional teams to gather necessary information and inputs for proposals. Ensure compliance with all federal acquisition regulations and client requirements. Client Relationship Management: Establish and maintain strong relationships with key federal agency personnel. Represent the company at industry events, conferences and meetings with government officials. Foster long-term relationships to enhance client satisfaction and repeat business. Internal Collaboration: Work closely with internal teams, including finance, marketing, operations and technical departments, to ensure alignment and successful contract execution. Provide regular updates to senior management on business development activities, opportunities and progress. Compliance and Reporting: Ensure all business development activities comply with federal laws, regulations and ethical standards. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of business development activities and outcomes. Prepare and present regular reports on business development metrics and performance. Other duties as assigned by management. QUALIFICATIONS FOR A FEDERAL GOVERNMENT BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST Education and Experience Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Public Administration or a related field. A Master's degree is preferred. Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in business development, sales or related field, with a focus on federal government contracting within the construction industry. Minimum of two (2) years DoD/federal direct award experience specifically with a Tribally owned construction company. Proven track record of securing federal contracts and achieving sales targets. Must be either a citizen of the U.S. or a non-U.S. citizen who has been lawfully admitted for permanent residence as evidenced by a Permanent Resident Card (USCIS I-551). Proven track record of managing and winning competitive proposals. Skills and Competencies Strong understanding of federal procurement processes and regulations (i.e., FAR, DFARS, etc.). Excellent communication, negotiation and presentation skills. Strong analytical and strategic thinking abilities. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and business development tools (i.e., CRM software). Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to work weekends, holidays and evening hours as business demands. The role is primarily office-based but may require travel to meet with clients, attend industry events and conduct market research. Occasional work outside of regular business hours may be required to meet deadlines or attend events. Ability to successfully pass and remain in compliance with required background checks from Tribal 1 and any required federal government background checks. Must pass drug screen and remain in compliance with drug free workplace policies.
