The goal of this position is to enhance current efforts to expand both undergraduate and graduate curricula in Latin American and Caribbean Studies; increase our faculty and scholarship devoted to the study of the experiences of Latin American and Caribbean peoples; and strengthen ISA's leadership in connecting Latin American and Caribbean Studies at UNC-CH with communities beyond the University. We seek early career applicants in the humanities and social sciences whose scholarship uses interdisciplinary approaches to Latin American and Caribbean Studies, especially in topics such as migration, inequality, human rights/rule of law, politics, environment, and/or afro-Latin American and Indigenous studies. The scholar hired will collaborate closely with ISA staff and faculty and have a separate home department that fits with the candidate's scholarly profile. Teaching responsibilities are divided equally between the home department and the Latin American and Caribbean Studies curriculum housed in ISA. Resources for professional growth and mentoring will be provided by the home department and ISA. PhD required at time of appointment. Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit: The principal mission of the Institute for the Study of the Americas (ISA) is to support the continual development of Latin American studies as it has evolved at Carolina for the past one hundred years. ISA seeks to expand the conceptual scope of Latin American studies to include the diasporic dimensions of Latin American peoples, with particular attention to the expanding Latin American presence in the United States. ISA is committed to the advancement of scholarly research, curriculum development, and innovative institutional initiatives consistent with the tradition of academic excellence at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In discharge of its mission within a public university, furthermore, ISA is dedicated to the expansion of the outreach facet of Latin American studies into the public provenance, to share its intellectual resources and instructional assets with state and local government agencies, private sector organizations, and the public at large as a way to provide the knowledge and develop the expertise and experience with which to inform enlightened public policy. Position Summary: This full-time tenure-track Gussenhoven Fellow position in Latin American Studies will teach graduate and undergraduate courses and whose scholarship engages the topics of migration, politics, and land and/or other resources; Afro-Latin American and Indigenous studies; and community-engagement. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: PhD Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience: Strong evidence of publication and funding activity; college-level teaching experience and excellence; other recognitions in their fields of study; record of engagement with Latin American and/or Caribbean scholars/institutions; and proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, Creole, or a language native to the region.
