Position Overview The Heavy Equipment Operator operates a variety of heavy equipment, including but not limited to, backhoes, bulldozers, graders, front end loader, flusher, sweeper, chipper, leaf machine, dump truck, and tractor trailer.
The Heavy Equipment Operator will often operate other light equipment as needed to complete jobs and tasks. The Heavy Equipment Operator may supervise a small unit of laborers as needed to complete a job or task. This person will inspect equipment used and report malfunctions or needed repairs on a daily basis.
Essential Job Functions
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, May include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
• Operates a backhoe digging ditches and holes, backfills and tamps ditches.
• Operates a dump truck.
• Operates a bobcat and tractor doing maintenance of ball fields and parks.
• Operates a front end loader in loading asphalt, gravel, sand, rock, slag, slurry, and similar materials on trucks.
• Operates a front end loader in loading gravel, sand, rock and similar materials.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Considerable knowledge of operating characteristics of assigned equipment. Considerable knowledge of the work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned equipment and operations.Knowledge of applicable traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in the operation of assigned equipment.
Some knowledge of the maintenance requirements of assigned equipment.Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructionsAbility to secure the applicable vehicle operators' license [City and Commercial).Ability to make minor operating adjustments and to recognize operating deficiencies in assigned equipment.Skill in the operation of assigned equipment and physical strength and agility to perform the work of the class.Ability to communicate effectively with the public.Ability to maintain harmonious and effective working relationships with other employees, supervisor and other departments. Education and Experience
High School graduate or equivalent. One (1) to two (2) years experience in operation of associated heavy equipment. Grounds chemical application experience preferred. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
Required Licenses or Certificates
Must possess valid Commercial Driver's License.

Physical requirements include occasional lifting/carrying of 50+ pounds; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate equipment. Subject to sitting, standing, reaching, walking, twisting and kneeling to perform the essential functions. Working conditions are primarily outdoors.
