Gender Policy Portfolio

The New Lines Institute for Strategy and Policy is seeking an Intern to join its Gender Policy Portfolio team and help with policy and analysis of gender issues in foreign policy. This person will support the portfolio's projects and workstreams, particularly with respect to research, information gathering, and outreach. The internship will last for six months, beginning in early October, with the possibility for extension. It is a paid internship.
The Gender Policy Portfolio was established to develop critical gender analysis on foreign policy and national security with a particular focus on Women, Peace, and Security; Sexual and Gender-Based Violence; and Gender as an Analytical Tool of Foreign Policy. This analysis will be used to directly support policy decision-makers and other New Lines teams, and develop products for the analytical community and broader public.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Research and contribute to drafting of reports and other deliverables related to gender and foreign policy
Support the coordination of events and speaking engagements, including preparing invitations, corresponding with participants, preparing background papers and materials for distribution, and providing other logistical support
Track news and data sources on women's issues and international policy issues
Interact with external partners and stakeholders, including assisting with the preparation of meetings, briefings, and other engagements
Publish one written deliverable on a topic related to gender and foreign policy
Assist with social media processes, including podcast production and/or drafting social media posts, as needed
Assist with tracking portfolio progress and impact
Perform various administrative tasks
Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in gender studies, international relations, political science, security studies, or other relevant fields, with a focus on topics related to gender and foreign policy
Excellent research, analytical, and writing skills
Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work as part of a team and communicate ideas effectively
Ability to work independently and take initiative to complete tasks and progress Portfolio objectives
Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail
A commitment to accuracy in reporting and analysis
Preferred Qualifications:
Graduate-level coursework in gender studies, international relations, political science, and security studies or related fields with focus on issues of gender equality/women's rights
Knowledge of U.S. government and/or multilateral institutions and related policy processes
Experience analyzing U.S. foreign policy and/or conducting policy-relevant research
Thematic or regional expertise
Salary Range:
$20-25/hour, based on experience
Location:
The selected candidate must be based in Washington, D.C. and is expected to commit to 20-29 hours a week (depending on availability), with the possibility of part-time telecommuting.
