Under general supervision, the Library Assistant is responsible for assisting in planning and creating activities to engage and promote library services to patrons, assisting with research, providing customer assistance in locating materials and utilizing computerized catalogs, participating in acquisition, special handling, and discarding of library materials, assisting with library programming, preparing statistics and reports, working with volunteers and maintaining records and databases, and providing information.

Essential Functions:
Provides efficient and courteous customer service and responds to questions and/or complaints as appropriate.
Assists in providing information to patrons in support of programs and services; reviews and updates program/service materials and computers to maintain usability. Assists with planning, preparing and working special programs or events.
Performs opening and/or closing procedures of library; balances register against cash receipts; processes hold requests and interlibrary loans and enforces policies and procedures of library.
Maintains library materials by shelving books, shelf reading, and straightening shelves as needed.
Assists with preparing and maintaining records, statistics, reports, brochures, display materials and/or other library resources.
Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers, and others in the course of daily work.
Regular and timely attendance are required for this position.
Provides efficient and courteous customer assistance including researching and responding to inquiries for information or assistance with library materials, computers and/or equipment or programs. Reviews and updates program/service materials and computers to maintain usability.
Researches, plans and creates unique and interesting themes for the children during story times. Identifies related books and activities including creating crafts and finding science experiments relating to the topic of the day.
Assists with selecting, acquiring, cataloging, processing, and special handling of library materials; cleans, repairs and maintains materials and returns to circulation.
Supervises and directs teen volunteers, administers skills tests for new shelving volunteers, logs volunteer hours, and assists in additional training if necessary.
Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.
Minimum Requirements:
Requires an Associate's Degree in Education or related field supplemented by two (2) years of Library or Literacy program related experience or possession of any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
Must possess and maintain a valid State of Texas Driver's License.
Part-time, 20 hours per week.
