The University of Virginia Investment Management Company (UVIMCO) seeks a Managing Director to join our team managing approximately $14 billion of assets on behalf of the University of Virginia and its associated organizations.UVIMCO's portfolio is invested globally across a broad range of strategies including public equity, long/short equity, absolute return, private equity, real estate, resources, credit, fixed income, and derivatives.UVIMCO routinely generates long-term investment returns that compare favorably with both benchmarks and peer institutions, and we are proud of the vital part that we play in supporting the University of Virginia's mission of developing responsible citizen leaders and professionals; advancing, preserving, and disseminating knowledge; and providing world-class patient care. UVIMCO currently employs approximately forty-five full-time staff. The investment team monitors and evaluates the full spectrum of global investment strategies and allocates capital to active external managers, and this bottoms-up manager selection process is balanced by a top-down approach to asset allocation and risk management. The investment team includes the CEO/CIO, five managing directors, one director, and several associates and analysts. Position Summary The Managing Director will be responsible for leading UVIMCO's public equity portfolio and will play a crucial role driving the overall success of the organization. This position is part of UVIMCO's leadership team, which is comprised of experienced professionals who are passionate about investing, committed to excellence, and care deeply about the University.
The Managing Director will report to the CEO/CIO and will be the senior decision maker on all aspects of UVIMCO's public equity strategy. The successful candidate will strike the right balance between being collaborative and decisive and will also be comfortable challenging existing policy and processes to achieve the best possible returns for UVIMCO and the University of Virginia.
The Managing Director will work collaboratively with other members of the investment team and will be expected to contribute positively to all investment decisions made at UVIMCO. Candidates must have demonstrated alignment to our organizational values, which include integrity, collaboration, excellence, and intellectual honesty. This position will be based in Charlottesville, Virginia, and remote candidates will not be considered.
Responsibilities Work collaboratively with the team to help generate attractive long-term real returns for the Long Term Pool within the risk tolerance of the University;Serve as a member of UVIMCO's Investment Committee, and participate in all aspects of UVIMCO's investment decision making process;Achieve and maintain "best in class" status for UVIMCO's public equity portfolio, which will include developing and implementing portfolio strategy, sourcing and researching new investment managers, and monitoring and evaluating the current portfolio;Challenge existing investment policy and implementation to achieve the best possible returns;Develop and research investment themes that will add value to long-term real returns;Provide support, mentorship, and management of junior investment staff;Educate and provide support to key stakeholders on investment-related matters including participation in relevant Board and Foundation meetings; andServe as a role model for all colleagues by operating with professionalism and demonstrating an unwavering commitment to UVIMCO's mission and values.Skills and Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess:
