The Production Manager is a member of the Operations leadership team and is responsible for establishing the direction and providing leadership for the Production Department. This individual will be responsible for delivering a strong and robust Manufacturing Excellence Program through Total Productive Manufacturing (TPM), Total Quality Management (TQM), and Lean-Six Sigma manufacturing philosophy to ensure a balanced delivery against the strategic Quality, Cost, Delivery, Environmental-Health-Safety, and People pillars.
Primary Responsibilities Food safety is a key accountability for this position; report all food safety and quality issues to the immediate Supervisor and/or head of Quality and take immediate action as appropriate within the team as defined by Quality procedures.Maintain safe and clean work environment to be audit-ready by educating and directing personnel on the use of control points, equipment, and resources.Maintain compliance with established policies and procedures, and develop timely corrective actions for all non-compliant situations.Supervise and evaluate the performance of production personnel: provide feedback, set goals, perform coaching or counseling, hold direct reports accountable, create development plans and record-keeping of attendance points, paid time off, training, etc.Maintain workflow by monitoring steps of the process; setting processing variables; observing control points and equipment; monitoring personnel and resources; studying methods; implementing cost reductions; developing reporting procedures and systems; facilitating corrections to malfunctions within process control points; initiating and fostering a spirit of cooperation within and between departments.Communicate and coordinate between the different departments (quality, R&D, warehouse, maintenance, and production).Collaborate with Operations, R&D, QA/QC, Procurement, and Planning colleagues to ensure an optimal schedule and then safe, efficient, timely delivery of the schedule.Ensure production meets or exceeds quality standards by adhering, but not limited to SOPs, FDA, HACCP, GMP, and OSHA regulations.Monitor operating specifications of each workstation; respond to and troubleshoot abnormalities in daily operations.Manage and monitor production budget and expenses; estimate costs and budgets.Determine the number of necessary resources: workforce, production supplies, raw materials, packaging, etc.Create maintenance work requests; prioritize work orders in collaboration with maintenance; prioritize and assist in defining maintenance requirements including spare parts, preventative maintenance, and work instructions.Regularly lead employee meetings for business updates, safety, quality, cost, and customer service performance and priorities with all production employees.Monitor employees' work performance and attitude and perform formal reviews as required by policy; conduct performance reviews of your direct reports.Drive and empower employee engagement, training, and development to maximize safety, quality, and productivity.Troubleshoot to identify and assist in developing solutions for issues affecting production.Lead continuous improvement projects and activities as required.Utilize TPM, TQM, and Lean Six Sigma principles and tools; educate and train employees utilizing Lean principles.Participate in the capital process in the Production Department including identifying, developing, submitting, and implementing CAPEX projects; approve purchase of equipment.Implement production control systems consistent with lean material flow systems, including pull systems, and level scheduling.Weekly / Monthly reporting on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for Production; develop daily, weekly, and monthly reporting tools to measure and visualize production performance; utilize available reporting tools (SAP, BI, COGNOS, Lumira, E-maintenance, etc.).Inventory management of production shop floor; ensure process orders are closed out in a timely manner; verify raw materials are consumed correctly; resolve and escalate process order issues.Develop and implement plans to continuously increase productivity and meet production budget.Develop and implement effective root cause - corrective actions within the Manufacturing function.Assess staffing levels across all lines and propose solutions to solve short- and long-term gaps in partnership with HR and 3rd Party agencies.Prior Knowledge/Experience Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Manufacturing Operations, or Business preferred.Minimum 5 years' experience in operations.At least 3 years in a managerial role within a production/operations environment; demonstrated leadership skills.Proficient in SAP, spreadsheets, databases, and presentations including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint.Demonstrated use of Continuous Improvement, TQM, and/or Lean tools including six sigma, value stream mapping, 5S, Root Cause Analysis, Pareto, DMAIC, Kaizen events, etc.Proven track record of driving performance in production departments including capacity increases, productivity improvement, and workforce optimization.Working knowledge of OEE principles and ways to use the information to eliminate repetitive downtimes and drive performance.Knowledge of master scheduling practices and capacity analysis.Experience in dealing with a unionized workforce.Strong experience in the areas of project management and maintenance.Excellent organizational, planning, influence, presentation, and follow-up skills.
