Job Summary Performs tasks of a more complex nature which require some training and semi-independent knowledge of the job. Positions are typically administrative or technical in nature and may involve the application of moderate skills.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Duties and responsibilities will typically involve more work variety, technical competence, and a moderate degree of independent judgment and responsibility for tasks such as drafting correspondence, preparing reports or spreadsheets, and conducting basic research.This position requires a moderate level of contact with internal and external customers.The ability to work as a team member is necessary.Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.Other Duties and Responsibilities Staffs the Research Help Desk as scheduled.Communicates with library staff to maintain current awareness of happenings in the Research Services department.Communicates with the public in person, by telephone, by e-mail, and by IM chat.Develops and maintains an understanding of the Library's online resources.Searches the library's discovery interface (Alma), LibGuides, and other electronic databases for sources of information.Assists library users in finding information in print and electronic formats.Assists library users in scanning documents, printing, and downloading files.Refers library users to other library and campus departments when appropriate.Troubleshoots problems with departmental equipment including PC workstations, printers, photocopiers, digital scanner workstations, and microform reader/printers.Provides assistance in the use of equipment.Logs all interactions with patrons in the system.Verifies scheduled time slots for study rooms and addresses any problems for people who have reserved them.Deals professionally with difficult patrons and addresses other problems when necessary.Contacts campus security or other appropriate persons in case of an emergency.Works on special projects as assigned by supervisor.Minimum Requirements Must be a current MSU student.Must maintain satisfactory academic progress.Must feel comfortable performing tasks that are not routine, but rather are more complex in nature.Must have the ability to understand and to follow written and verbal instructions.Must be able to work somewhat independently, utilizing initiative and a moderate level of judgment, analytical and/or decision-making skills.Must be able to operate a variety of office equipment such as copier, telephone, etc.Additional Desirable Qualifications Exceptional communication and people skills.Computer literacy.Ability to learn new skills quickly.Working Conditions The Research Services Undergraduate Assistant staffs the Research Help Desk during specified times, including hours from 10am to 10pm Monday through Thursday and afternoon hours Friday through Sunday.
