Job Role SummaryThe RN Specialist- Vascular Access utilizes the Eskenazi Health Model of Care- Synergy to provide clinical care and coordination to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care needs of patients requiring vascular access. They provide the most clinically appropriate vascular access, including ultrasound guided peripheral intravenous catheter (PIV)s, midlines, and peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC), consistent with evidenced based practice in collaboration with the inter-professional team.
Essential Functions and ResponsibilitiesPromotes a healthy work environmentEffectively performs all nursing functions in an efficient manner and in accordance with policies, procedures, the Indiana Nursing Practice Act, and the Eskenazi Health Model of Care- the Synergy Model.Provides personal and individualized patient careProvides timely feedback on any customer service issue to the right person/departmentMaintains safe patient care and advocates for patient safetyParticipates in clinical or operational performance improvement using evidence-based practiceEffectively supports the development of other staff and learnersVascular Access Job FunctionsProvides patient and staff education on vascular accessDemonstrates ability to assess patient past and current medical history including that is pertinent in qualifying a patient as a candidate for vascular accessObtains Informed Consent for PICC and midline insertions.Performs time out; correct patient identifier prior to initiating PICC or midline insertionDemonstrates ability to perform vascular access placement maintaining aseptic technique.Demonstrates high level skills in critical thinking and assessment related to vascular access devices.Documents insertion of vascular access deviceCompletes vascular access auditsParticipates in performance improvement activitiesJudgementEmployee may work independently under the general direction of their leaderAssociated Job DutiesPerforms all other job-related duties as assignedMonitors central line blood stream infection (CLABSI) prevention bundle complianceJob RequirementsCurrent Indiana license as a Registered NurseRN degree from a nationally accredited college or universityMinimum 3 years inserting peripheral IV linesACLS & BLS certification maintained.Must successfully complete the BD PICC insertion training program and hands-on competency review before completing orientationVascular Access Certification obtained within 18 months of hire.Special Effort RequiredPhysical stamina, considerable walking, standing, lifting/moving of patients.
