Join our team as a Seasonal Events Associate at Massachusetts Horticultural Society!
This exciting opportunity allows you to be a part of our welcoming and dynamic Visitor Services team during the busiest parts of our season.
As a Seasonal Events Associate, you will play a crucial role in creating a memorable experience for our visitors by operating a point-of-sale admission system (looking up ticket presales, checking in ticket holders, and selling fresh cut flowers).

Availability: This position requires availability during regular weekdays, evenings, weekends, occasional holidays, and support for special events as needed.

This position is for approximately 20 hours per week and may vary based on the seasonal demands of the Garden.

Additional hours are available in October and November if the candidate is willing and able to assist with holiday lighting installation in the garden.


Job Description:

General Summary: As a Seasonal Events Associate, you will be responsible for providing exceptional customer service to Garden Visitors while assisting with admissions, membership, and event sales.


Duties & Responsibilities:

Essential Duties:
Operate in a fast-paced retail setting. Promote MHS memberships, classes, tours, and events. Welcome and assist visitors, answering Garden-related questions. Use a computerized POS system for sales and ticket inquiries. Handle special orders and payments following guidelines. Maintain work area cleanliness & tidiness.
Check in tickets for seasonal events Troubleshoot technology issues with POS systems and scanners. Open and close the Admissions Booth, ensuring proper terminal setup. Supervise volunteer greeters for added customer support. Attend department meetings and training sessions. Assist with event setup and sales processing. Ensure visitor safety and security. Enforce Garden rules and policies. Complete other assigned tasks as needed.
Success Factors:

- Effectively engage with guests and staff, adapting to various situations and using your experience to communicate effectively.

- Demonstrate a willingness to learn about the Garden, its programs, and its mission, and share your knowledge.

Education and Experience:

Qualifications:

- Driver's license and/or reliable transportation, which may be during periods of snowy weather

- High school graduate required.

- Preferred: 2+ years of retail or customer service experience.

- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

- Experience operating a point of sale (POS) system and handling cash and credit transactions, and using a phone, walkie-talkie, and laptop

- Ability to work independently, solve problems, and make informed decisions.

- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in task completion.

- Flexibility and adaptability to changing circumstances.

- Experience in a non-profit environment and/or familiarity with community resources is a plus.

- Bi-/multi-lingual abilities are a plus.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

Physical Demands:

- Involves limited physical activity, including lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs, occasional use of a step ladder, and standing for extended periods.

Work Environment:

- 75% of tasks will take place outdoors, in a tented space

- If assisting in October and November - 100% outdoor work

-75% of tasks will take place indoors in December

Equipment:

- General office equipment, iPad, laptop, and point of sale (POS) system (Shopify)
