Supervisor Nursing - Operating Room Location: Seattle, Washington Supervisor Nursing - Operating Room Full Time
Day Shift Responsible for coordinating patient care and nursing service
activities consistent with the mission, vision and values of the
organization. Supervises the operating room clinical staff. Directs
the professional nursing care for patients in assigned area. Assesses
plans, evaluates and documents the Nursing process in the assigned unit
as needed.
Responsible for Surgical Services: Operating Room, Anesthesia, Day
Surgery, PACU, Fiberoptics, and Surgery Patient Chargeables management.
Works with Unit Based Staffing Committee to prepare staffing budgets and
works with Finance by assessing historical data, supply and equipment
needs by communicating with physicians on capital equipment needs and
validating requirements. Evaluates effectiveness of existing programs
and services, and implements new services as appropriate. Communicates
budget information as necessary to staff and physicians. Monitors and
deals with budget's variances appropriately. Accountable for assigned clinical operations, patient care
activities, coordinating patient care delivery on a daily basis in
collaboration with other members of the health care team. Makes and
adjusts patient assignments based on patient care, family, physician and
staff needs. Schedule and adjust meal and break schedules to meet
patient care needs and to comply with human resource policies. Assures compliance with department and regulatory standards by
assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the delivery of
patient care by reinforcing positive outcomes and demonstrating
corrective action for identified problems. Follows AORN and ASPAN
standards and implements appropriately. Plans and implements department staffing and scheduling to provide
appropriate staffing levels and skills mix. Provides guidance and
feedback to staff so that trends in unit-based monitoring and evaluation
reflect quality improvement and compliance with regulatory standards.
Evaluates and adjusts staffing utilization to ensure cost effective,
safe patient care. Utilizes critical thinking and prioritization skills to Coordinate
the flow of surgical cases. Runs the OR schedule efficiently based upon
needs of patient, surgeon and staff. Works collaboratively with other surgical units to provide access
to OR schedule for surgeons and patients. Collaborates with anesthesia
care providers by communicating changes to the schedule and seeking
their advise when problem solving difficult situations. Consistently demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills,
commitment to customer service principles and attitude. Exemplifies
behaviors described in the SMC's Service Excellence Commitments. Demonstrates awareness of status of each operating room by making
rounds and facilitating cases as needed. Identifies real or potential
patient care issues and intervenes accordingly. Demonstrates clinical competence by assisting with patient care in
order to maintain clinical skills. Spends time in each area to coach,
develop, evaluate and advocate for staff. Investigates patient, family, physician and staff complaints and facilitates service recovery. Completes performance evaluations and counseling of staff in a
timely manner. Identifies staff behaviors to be recognized or
disciplined and notifies manager. Works with Human Resources Business
Partner Manager with counseling in the disciplinary process in
accordance with labor management and hospital polices. Serves as a role
model and resource for staff to be accountable for adhering to
standards. Maintains and ensures compliance in all pertinent policies and
procedures and Joint Commission and ASPAN requirements. Actively
participates in performance improvement activities within the unit and
with other departments. Provides feedback to staff so that trends in
monitoring reflect compliance with regulatory and department standards. Communicates shift information and/or problems to the appropriate
person. Demonstrates critical thinking skills in problem-solving issues.
Demonstrates effective delegation and prioritization skills. Responsible for interviewing and hiring of staff for the unit and
assists Manager to create and maintain a department environment that
encourages staff development, retention of staff, customer services and
patient/family-centered care. Participates in the identification, planning and implementation of
educational programs for all levels of staff and ensures active
participation of staff in educational activities and research.
Contributes to educational process and professional development of
students in the healthcare field. Assists Manager in building physician relations. Has ability to recognize the patient's age as a relevant factor and
applies appropriate decision-making skills in the assessment, treatment
on care provided for the patient. Required Qualifications: Upon hire: National Provider BLS - American Heart Association Upon hire: Washington Registered Nurse License 5 years relevant clinical experience with demonstrated clinical knowledge and leadership qualities Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree
Applicants without a BSN degree must actively pursue and attain a
BSN within five years of hire.
