The Position
Background Investigation Technicians conduct preemployment background investigations primarily for non-sworn employment candidates for the Department of Public Safety.
Under general supervision, incumbents perform the full range of duties as described in the series concept for both sworn and non-sworn employment candidates. This is the journey level in the series. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) seeks a highly motivated individual to fill a vacant Background Investigation Technician position in Carson City with the Background Investigations Unit. The duties include but are not limited to: thorough review of extensive background application packets for completeness and accuracy; gather and assess information provided by applicants to determine the validity of documents received; and research and obtain candidates' driving records and criminal history records using state and federal databases such as NCIC and NCJIS and the judicial systems.
The incumbent will conduct interviews with applicants, references, current and past employers, coworkers, relatives, etc.; discuss sensitive topics pertaining to applicants; use good judgment and investigative techniques to appropriately ask clarifying questions; follow up on unanswered questions; identify and resolve conflicting statements and factors that may affect candidates' suitability for employment; maintain accurate and detailed interview notes; prepare comprehensive fact-based reports for consideration by the hiring authority; create, organize, and maintain background investigations files; and provide weekly statistical data to the unit supervisor for submission to the DPS Director's Office. The ideal candidate has attention to detail; possesses strong oral and written communication skills; interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with people of diverse backgrounds; organizational skills necessary to effectively maintain multiple caseloads; a working knowledge of interviewing and investigative techniques; and enjoys a busy and rewarding career. APPLICANTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE*** To Qualify In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements: Qualifications Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in business administration, criminal justice or related field and one year of paraprofessional experience performing investigative, auditing or program-related duties which required the application of federal and State statutes; reviewing documents for program compliance determinations; and preparing reports summarizing findings; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of experience one of which included paraprofessional experience as described above; OR one year as a Background Investigation Technician I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Requirements Positions require a pre-employment background/criminal history check and fingerprinting. Proof of a valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation.
