University of Iowa Health Care Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism is seeking a PA/ARNP Hospitalist to provide medical care and management for inpatients and outpatients with diabetes. This position would cover weekends only - maximum of 2 weekends per month (Saturday & Sunday, 10-hour shifts).
Provision of Medical/ Psychiatric Care; Collaboration with Care Team: Perform overall medical care and medical management exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided primarily in an inpatient setting under a collaborative practice agreement.Collaborate/consult in the optimization of care delivery through coordination and transitions of care as a part of a team.Use judgment to provide continuity of care incorporating best practices and encouraging others to do the same.Obtain diabetes history, assess diabetes self-care and collaborate with endocrine staff in determining the initial diabetes care plan.Make regular rounds to evaluate effectiveness of current diabetes regimen in achieving optimal blood glucose control.Recommend changes in diabetes regimen as indicated.Communicate diabetes regimen changes to primary team and nursing staff.Review, add, discontinue and/or modify diabetes orders in EMR.Document the effectiveness of current diabetes regimen in the medical record using subjective and objective data.Establish the diabetes follow-up plan to expedite discharge.Consult dietitians and diabetes educators as appropriate.Provide consultation to the diabetes educators regarding after discharge follow-up of blood sugar control.Participate in the development, utilization and evaluation of resources to meet patient and family educational needs.Assure clinical competency and expertise in diabetes management.Collaborate with medical, nursing, nutrition, and other health professionals to monitor and evaluate the quality of care of hospitalized patients with diabetes.Compliance with Internal Policies and External Regulations for Safe and Effective Care Delivery and Health Profession and Education: Accurately and appropriately complete documentation of patient care in the EMR and other records for compliance, billing and other regulatory standards.Participate and/or lead in quality, safety, and process improvement activities.Submit charges following the policies and procedures of the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism.Education/ Health/ Promotion/ Research: Provide guidance and counseling to patients/families by providing information regarding the status of blood sugar control and the current diabetes regimen.Provide diabetes education and serve as a resource for CCOM and UIHC staff and providers.Enhance and support the clinical educational experience of trainees including medical students, residents and other health professional learners.Participate in ongoing research and professional development of self and other staff. Serve on committees to enhance patient care and operations. Incorporate research findings into practice.Administration/ Human Resources Management: Assure effective communication/collaboration with all team members in the delivery of care.Follow prescribed practices in communicating and elevating any quality and patient safety concerns.Coach and recognize team members whenever appropriate.QUALIFICATIONS Education Required: Physician Assistant (PA): Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA.Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP): A Master's degree is required. A Master's degree in Nursing is preferred. If a Master's degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is required.Experience Requirements: ARNP - Board certified and registered as an ARNP in state of Iowa.ARNP - Current license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa is required.Reasonable (1 or more years) experience in area of practice is required or previous experience in specified hospital specialty area or demonstrated knowledge of area of clinical practice.Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.Desirable Qualifications: Experience in diabetes clinical practice is highly desirable.Experience providing overall medical care and medical management for patients in an inpatient setting is highly desirable.Experience exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided is highly desirable.Experience managing length of stay, improving resource utilization and decreasing costs to patients and the institution while providing personalized care is highly desirable.Previous experience with diabetes evaluation and management is desirable.Contact:
