Job Description:
The Patent Technical Specialist assists with patent research, patent application preparation and submission, and patent prosecution activities, as well as searching literature and patent databases to develop and recommend patent strategies, leveraging a strong scientific background.
This position will interface with firm attorneys and staff, administrative departments, and other entities where necessary.

Assist attorneys in conducting literature and patent searching.
Assist attorneys in reviewing file histories of patents.
Analyze literature and patent databases to assess the patentability of inventions.
Assist with prosecution of patent applications under close attorney supervision.
Prepare patent applications under close attorney supervision.
Perform other duties as assigned.

The requirements listed below are representative of the skills and abilities required.
Job Requirements:
0-3 years of patent experience; Post-doctoral or other related experience preferred.
Advanced scientific degree (M.S., Ph.D.); or Bachelor's Degree in technical discipline with relevant experience.
Clear, concise, and accurate communication skills, both verbal and written.
Strong technical writing skills.
Effectively maintain working relationships with others involved in a legal matter.
Sound judgement and inquiring disposition.
Ability to maintain multiple responsibilities.
Ability to manage deadlines, monitor prosecution docket, and comply with practice group procedures.
Sound scientific and technical knowledge.
Awareness of key sources for case law and preparing arguments.
Awareness of patent prosecution procedures.
Awareness of leading cases affecting patent law.
Basic understanding of requirements for patentability.
Basic understanding of validity and infringement concepts.
Awareness of procedural requirements and stages of patent lifecycle.
Basic understanding of patent application structure.
Basic ability to apply rules and guidelines within the Manual of Patent Examining Procedure.
Ability to conduct and evaluate basic patent and literature searched effectively.
Ability to prepare key facts and observations for responses and opinions.
In accordance with applicable Federal and State laws, the anticipated annual salary range for this position, depending on location, is as follows: Chicago, IL: $98,949 to $150,943 Washington, DC: $103,252 to $157,505 Boston, MA: $103,252 to $157,505 Los Angeles, CA: $103,252 to $157,505 San Francisco, CA: $107,554 to $164,068 In addition to a standard benefits package, this role may be eligible for additional contingent compensation based on an array of factors, including but not limited to: work performance, geographic location, work experience, education, and qualifications.
Because such contingent compensation is not yet calculable or may be zero ($0) in some circumstances, the above-listed salary range(s) are Nixon Peabody's good faith estimate of the annual salary(ies) it reasonably expects to pay for the position at the time of this posting.
