Job Description
The School of Plant and Environmental Sciences in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences seeks to hire a full time Academic and Student Support Advisor. This administrative/professional faculty calendar year position will work with our Advising team to provide accurate, timely advising services and undergraduate program coordination to the department related to degree requirements and academic course options, recruitment and retention, admissions process, placement and registration, department and college orientation and retention activities, and professional representation and communication of the department and its programs to the internal/external university community, public sector, industry and alumni. The Advisor will work proactively and collaboratively with the college academic affairs department to provide synergy and consistent, professional advising to all students of the college, work with faculty to assist finding undergraduate research opportunities and internships, and develop partnerships with other CALS and life science units to best meet advising needs of SPES students, including but not limited to advising and career advising. The Advisor will work with the department Communications Coordinator to enhance/develop materials for the advising manual, SPES web site, orientation sessions, and other workshops. In addition to above responsibilities, the Advisor will assist with undergraduate teaching in SPES.
Required Qualifications
Master's degree from an accredited institution, preferably in student development, counseling, or education; or, a Bachelor's degree coupled with training and work experience that may equate to an advanced degree; Academic advising experience, classroom instructional experience, student counseling, and/or other relevant experience; Must have strong interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and be able to implement web-based advising tools and other information resources with the ability to develop and deliver public presentations with confidence to large and small groups including faculty, students and their families; Excellent organizational and project management skills, maintaining detailed and accurate records; Ability to work with a diverse population of students with various ages, abilities, and ethnic backgrounds; Demonstrated commitment towards creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community; Ability to multitask within high traffic, student-centered environment; Ability and willingness to be flexible in task assignments and adapt to changing situations; In addition to the above required qualifications, the successful candidate should have a history of collaboration and the ability to be a collegial departmental, college, and university community member; Willingness to learn about the field of environmental and plant sciences; Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in undergraduate engagement and teaching; Knowledge of student development theories and services, appreciative advising; Counseling skills and recruitment/retention strategies; Demonstrated understanding of the programs at Virginia Tech relevant to curricular issues and student success; Experience working with Banner and reading a Degree Audit Report; Past work experience in a professional office environment
