Academic Specialist - Upward Bound ProgramPosition Summary The Academic Specialist will administer and interpret standardized tests, organize records, conduct training for tutors, make tutorial referrals, relate to and promote the total growth of students, develop, disseminate, collect, and maintain information systems designed to assess participants; interact positively with students from various backgrounds, and apply an understanding of psychology and cultural characteristics of disadvantaged students. The Academic Specialist will serve as the advisor for senior program participants.
Duties Administer and interpret standardized tests, organize records, and make referrals for students to attend tutorials.Select and train highly qualified tutors for the program.Attend staff development and departmental meetings.Prepare computer diagnostic needs assessment of participants to provide a learning plan of basic and non-basic skills subject areas.Monitor students' academic progress.Prepare students' class schedules.Complete IEPs for students.Administer Pre and Post ACT tests to program participants and monitor results.Monitor class size of participants not to exceed 25 students.Advise senior participants in completing scholarship information, registering for the ACT, and completing college applications, FAFSA, and financial aid information for postsecondary education.Perform duties related to completing the Competitive Preference Priorities as identified in the Upward Bound grant.Prepare spreadsheets of students' 9-week grades for the Academic Component and Upward Bound Instructors' grades for Summer and Academic Component.Travel required for college tours, conferences, and target school visits.Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities A minimum of a Master's Degree in Educational Administration, Guidance and Counseling, or a related field. A minimum of three (3) years in a position performing the above duties and responsibilities; experience in working with low-income, first-generation, and disadvantaged students.
