Acquire book proposals for APHA Press that are in line with the Strategic Publishing Plan with the assistance of the Publications Board and the Publications business team. (This is an internal posting for APHA employees only) Solicit, secure, and coordinate the acquisition of 5-6 book-length manuscripts each year for the APHA Press program to ensure a robust pipeline of material for publication. Recruit authors or editors for specific projects and select topics in accordance with the APHA Press Strategic Plan. Build relationships with authors and editors in the field to have as experts for specific public health subject matters. Work closely with the APHA Press marketing manager to determine potential book projects to stay abreast of publishing strategies. Ensure final submitted publishing proposals meet the requirements of the APHA Press guidelines. Serve as liaison between authors and/or editors and the publications department and arbitrate when needed to resolve conflicts. Work closely with publishing director to determine potential spin-off projects for the Press. Act as the liaison for the Publications Board. Work closely with the Chair of the Board for each meeting. Oversee the review process for the Publishing Plan every 5 years with the Publications Board. Establish and implement short- and long-range goals and objectives, policies, and operating procedures. Monitor the Board to keep their work in line with the Publishing Plan. Oversee the blinded manuscript review process with the Board for each submitted proposal. Performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in English or related field. At least 8–10 years' experience editing and producing scholarly journals and books, including knowledge of copyediting and editorial style and format. Background in publishing is a must. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Knowledge of the acquisition process for book-length manuscripts. Skill in business and financial planning and management. Conflict resolution and/or mediation skills. Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals. Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions. Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and negotiating skills. Should be able to work with: Microsoft Office Suite products, Adobe Creative Suite products, web-based database systems, and website creation and editing tools. Familiarity with Macintosh strongly preferred. Must be able to travel occasionally (required).
Position is based in downtown DC near several metro stations. Hybrid work environment.
