The City of Norwalk seeks a motivated individual to join our Norwalk Team!
Qualified candidates will be assigned to the Transportation Department, but please note that this established qualified list may be used for other departments, including but not limited to Administration, Public Safety, etc.


Performs specialized technical and routine administrative work; performs related duties as required.


The Administrative Intern is a multiple position class in the administrative series.
Positions allocated to the class perform varied and specialized technical and professional assignments as well as routine administrative duties.
The class may be utilized in various City departments.
Essential Duties

Depending on assignment, essential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

GENERAL: Performs research and analysis on administrative, fiscal, and operational matters as directed; prepares reports to summarize findings and makes recommendations as to appropriate action to be taken.
Compiles data and prepares reports in accordance with general guidelines.
Assists in budget preparation, analysis, and administration; as directed, performs audits and/or maintains records of account activity; prepares projections of service volumes and related costs.
Participates in the preparation and revision of manuals and other administrative materials; provides administrative assistance in the implementation of new administrative procedures.
Responds to inquiries and provides technical and administrative assistance to resolve complaints, or refers to appropriate authority.
Operates a computer terminal to key data, perform file maintenance, and generate computer reports; may initiate or prepare correspondence in the performance of assigned tasks; performs related duties as required.


COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT: Assists in the preparation of reports and associated maps/graphics; takes pictures of various locations in the City for agenda items; updates log books; checks zoning/permitted uses; conducts planning surveys; answers basic counter email and phone inquiries; may review plot plans for residential additions and minor commercial remodels after consulting with supervisor; prepares zoning verification letters; scans document plans and entitlements; researches and compiles data; performs related duties as required.


COMMUNITY INFORMATION: Assists in the overall community information program; prepares and edits news releases, brochures, articles and reports; assists in layout, writing and editing of the City newsletter and other City publications; prepares advertising for City programs and services; assists in coordinating with departments for the development of news items for City publications; assists with script writing for cable television productions; assists with the writing of comments for special events; maintains and updates information files; assists with answering inquiries about local government and City policies, procedures and programs; performs related duties as required.


ENGINEERING: Assists Engineering staff with drafting, by hand or using Auto CAD; updates official maps and records; prepares street design drawings and miscellaneous sketches for staff presentations; performs field work to assist the survey crew with surveying; collects traffic count data; prepares traffic collision diagrams; takes pictures for new developments; conducts research; prepares basic reports; provides information over the counter and by phone; assists with special projects; makes special deliveries and pickups; performs related duties as required.


TRANSPORTATION: Daily review and processing of reports related to the CAD/AVL system to include but not limited to the following: A.M. revenue service pullout; on-time performance of revenue service vehicles; health monitoring of onboarding Automatic Passenger Count (APC); import and export of schedule data; revenue ridership; revenue miles and hours; follow-up with Avail customer support cases; various KPI reports as needed.

Qualification Guidelines

Knowledge of: methods and techniques of research, statistical analysis, and report preparation; methods and procedures of budget preparation; organization and functions of the assigned municipal department; general office procedures.

Ability to: perform specialized, technical, professional and routine administrative tasks in assigned area; operate a computer in performance of assigned tasks; conduct research, perform analysis, and prepare reports of findings; interpret and apply related laws, ordinances, and regulations; work independently; understand and follow oral and written directions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary.
Example combinations include:

Recent graduate or current enrollment in an accredited college or university, preferably with upper division standing and completion of course work in a field appropriate to assignment, such as: public or business administration, accounting, urban planning, journalism, marketing, engineering or architecture.

BENEFITS FOR HOURLY/AT-WILL/PART-TIME EMPLOYEES Terms of Employment: All employees hired as Hourly/At-Will/Part-Time are employed "at-will" throughout the term of their employment with the City.
Consequently, the services of a Hourly/At-Will/Part-Time employee can be discontinued at anytime without cause, regardless of the number of hours worked for the City by the employee.


Retirement: Membership in the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS) is required.
The employee pays the 7.5% retirement contribution.


Credit Union: The City is affiliated with the Los Angles County F & A Federal Credit Union.

Paid Holidays: After 3,000 hours of employment, an hourly employee is entitled to six hours pay for specified holidays designated in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).


Vacation Leave: After 3,000 hours of employment, vacation leave is accumulated at the rate of .046 hours for each hour of straight time worked.


Sick Leave: Beginning on the 30th day of employment with the City, employee will accrue sick leave at the rate of .033 hours for each hour of straight time worked.
No sick leave shall be taken until the 90th day of employment.
After 3,000 hours of employment, sick leave is accumulated at the rate of .046 hours for each hour of straight time worked.


Medical Plan: Eligibility for medical coverage is determined using the Affordable Care Act guidelines.
Employees may also qualify after 3,000 hours of employment.


Voluntary Insurance Plans: Optional Short Term Disability, Hospitalization, Accident and Cancer insurance policies are available at the employee's cost.
