While similar to the role that a doctor plays in health management, the APNP's approach is slightly different. In addition to diagnosing and treating illness and injury, an APNP instructs patients on wellness and prevention, along with serving an educational and promotional role in the community.*Position Qualifications:*o *Education: *Master's Degree in an Advanced Practice Nursing program.o *Experience: *At least 3 years experience preferred.o *Licenses, Certifications: *Must be a member in good standing with the State of Alaska Board of Nursing.o *Specialized Skills: *Excellent communication skills – written and verbal, ability to display tact and sensitivity, problem solving skills, great decision-making skills, professionalism, teamwork and leadership skills and have resilienceo *Preferred Qualifications: *APNP, CRNA, CNM, NP, FNP*Position Responsibilities and Essential Functions:*o Take and record patients' medical histories and symptomso Perform physical exams and observe patientso Create patient care plans or contribute to existing planso Perform and order diagnostic testso Operate and monitor medical equipmento Diagnose various health problemso Prescribe medications as needed to the BFC patients.o Analyze test results or changes in a patient's condition, and alter treatment plans, as neededo Give patients medicines and treatmentso Evaluate a patient's response to medicines and treatmentso Consult with doctors and other healthcare professionals, as neededo Counsel and teach patients and their families how to stay healthy or manage their illnesses or injurieso Conduct research*Other Duties:*Possession of exceptional communication and interpersonal skills that enable effective collaboration with physicians, staff, community health workers, patients and their families.*Competencies:*o Ability to provide expert clinical judgment and function independentlyo Ability to work with little or no supervision, and to take initiative in handling the responsibilities of the position.o Ability to understand complex medical information and clearly communicate it to patients and their families, medical staff, and external customers, in written and spoken form.o Possession of conflict resolution and problem solving skills to effectively manage conflict in the work environment.o Ability to keep all sensitive and confidential information to self and out of reach to unauthorized persons.*Physical Demands and Work Environment:*o Working with patients can be both physically and emotionally demanding. APNPs spend much of their time on their feet.o BLS and other certification as determined by specialty and clinical setting. Able to meet the physical requirements of the position.
