Career Description: Diagnose, treat, and help prevent allergic diseases and disease processes affecting the immune system.
Life As an Allergist or Immunologist: What Do They Do?Perform allergen provocation tests such as nasal, conjunctival, bronchial, oral, food, or medication challenges.Prescribe medication such as antihistamines, antibiotics, and nasal, oral, topical, or inhaled glucocorticosteroids.Provide therapies, such as allergen immunotherapy or immunoglobin therapy, to treat immune conditions.Educate patients about diagnoses, prognoses, or treatments.Interpret diagnostic test results to make appropriate differential diagnoses.Conduct physical examinations of patients.What Skills Do You Need to Work as an Allergist or Immunologist?When polled, Allergists and Immunologists say the following skills are most frequently used in their jobs:
