American Express Ventures ("Amex Ventures") seeks to identify and invest in category leading startups shaping the future of financial services, consumer commerce and enterprise software. As a value-added investor, Amex Ventures plays a key role in developing and executing long-term corporate strategic initiatives which contribute to American Express' market leadership and growth. Team members work with senior management, C-level executives and business leaders across the company to execute venture investments, both domestically and internationally. The team also initiates and executes non-organic business development and strategic initiatives.
The Amex Ventures team is seeking a highly motivated individual to help develop investment theses, source and execute investments, monitor and support portfolio companies, and drive partnership opportunities.
This role is based in New York, NY.
Job Scope & Responsibilities
In this exciting opportunity, the Investment Analyst will be an integral part of the Fintech and Commerce investing team at Amex Ventures, playing a key role in the day-to-day evaluation and execution of transactions including strategic rationale analysis, due diligence, valuation, structuring, and negotiations through to closing. The Investment Analyst will be responsible for sourcing, market map/thesis generation, and driving strategic engagement between American Express and its portfolio companies.
Responsibilities:
Engage across the full lifecycle of venture investing, including sourcing, evaluating, transacting, and managing investments
Conduct market and industry analysis to support investment thesis development around strategic focus areas
Build strong relationships with the venture capital and startup ecosystem to proactively identify and qualify relevant companies
Evaluate business cases and assess investment opportunities from a strategic, operational and financial perspective
Provide key analysis and support for transactions, working closely with internal and external partners to execute investments
Manage due diligence and investment decision-making process including preparation of investment memos, financial modeling and analysis, oversight of legal negotiations, and management of deal execution workstreams
Monitor portfolio company performance on an ongoing basis, working with internal and external stakeholders to drive strategic partnership value
Qualifications:
1-4 years previous professional experience in a finance, strategy, or tech role; examples may include VC or PE investing, investment banking, management consulting, or a high-impact role at a technology company (product management, business operations, strategic finance, etc.)
Ability to operate autonomously in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
Well-developed strategic thinking capabilities to identify and assess key points, implications and recommendations on a first-principles basis
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of driving effective collaboration across internal and external stakeholders
Analytical mindset and deep understanding of finance and valuation fundamentals
Strong interest in fintech and commerce and motivation to engage with the startup ecosystem
Bachelor's degree required
Salary Range: $55,000.00 to $105,000.00 annually + bonus + benefits
