Position SummaryThe Aquarist II is a mid-level animal keeper role. The Aquarist II has demonstrated or possesses advanced husbandry skills and knowledge for all species in our current collection. They have not only mastered their assigned saltwater section, but they can also assist and cover any other exhibit in the aquarium at any given time with ease. They are good teachers and readily pass on their knowledge to newer aquarists on the team. Aquarist II will assist the Senior Aquarist in new hire training as well as continuing the development of the Husbandry Assistants and Aquarist I. They have basic to advanced LSS knowledge and keep their tanks and systems in pristine condition. They are able to identify problems and troubleshoot solutions as they arise on a more advanced level than an Aquarist I.  

Additionally, the Aquarist II, can seamlessly fill any GEA station. They are a champion when it comes to Guest engagement whether it is by way of broadcast feeds, animal interactions, educational talks, or membership sales. This position is part of a diverse team that is responsible for creating a memorable and impactful guest experience through animal education and interaction. As one of the first aquariums to be built in the US, Children's Aquarium Dallas has a unique history while also showcasing interesting animals through first-class hospitality as part of the experience. We are looking for an energetic team-player who loves animals and educating the public as much as we do.
 Duties & Responsibilities Aquarist II at Children's Aquarium Dallas are responsible for all usual responsibilities of an Aquarist I. Additional responsibilities specific to the Aquarist II role can include but are not limited to the following:Daily duties: cleaning exhibits internally and externally, prepping and feeding food, treating any injured/diseased individuals, making observations, recognizing abnormal animal behavior/appearance, acting on/reporting such changes in a timely manner and completing all necessary paperwork thoroughly.Ensures daily tasks are accomplished within established SOP timeframes using strong time management skills.Assists with the development of aquatic staff by operating as a trainer and resource to the newer members of the team and when an aquarist is ready to learn more advanced species. Serves as secondary on other exhibits when needed.Partners with the Senior Aquarist to teach staff with demonstrated knowledge in aquatic animal care, life support systems, and water quality to ensure safety, competence, and efficiency.Champions a supportive and fun team synergy by having excellent interpersonal approach and a collaborative spirit.Helps to uphold our standards of care for volunteers, Interns, and trainees.Follows direction and acts in accordance with all established protocols and procedures. Compliance with all accreditation, environmental, and USDA standards. Assists in recognizing areas where written protocols need to be created or advanced in pursuit of compliance, welfare and consistency in care.Regular exhibit diving as needed.Monitors exhibit functionality, air and water parameters, identifying and communicating anomalies/ concerns in a timely fashion.Accurate recordkeeping for short- and long-term monitoring of health, behavior, tracking trends and advancing animal practices.Engages guests in pursuit of education and conservation goals. This includes chats, tours, media appearances, ambassador animal programs, etc. Able to represent our institution with professionalism and in support of mission-oriented efforts.Practices good judgement in decision making, with minimal interruptions to the guest experience and daily operations as it relates to animal care, emergency situations, LSS repair & any other projectsPossesses strong communication skills, including listening and thoughtful dialogue.Regularly proposes solutions to problems. Looks for creative and productive ways to address problems.Leads by example. Takes ownership. Has a positive attitude, practices high standards, models professional behavior, and maintains positive impact on teambuilding and morale.Other duties as assigned.Experience, Skills & QualificationsCollege degree in wildlife/marine biology or related field -and- minimum 2 years work experience with marine or aquatic animal husbandry required.Diver certification/ rescue training requiredExperience in a zoological facility, public fresh and saltwater aquarium(s), or similar facility required. An accredited public facility is preferred.Experience with care of aquatic animals/ LSS systems in a commercial or non-profit setting with demonstrated success. An accredited public facility is preferred.Significant experience with a variety bony fishes, elasmobranchs and aquatic invertebrates found in fresh and saltwater habitats.Previous experience with reptiles or amphibians required.Experience with quarantine, disease recognition, administering medicine and medical treatment of all above mentioned animals required.Experience in a training role preferred.1+ years' experience in customer service
