Archaeological Field Director Position at Stantec
Stantec's Environmental Services Division is actively seeking experienced mid-career field Archaeologists to serve as field directors for our Cultural Resources team.
As an integral member of the Southern California Cultural Resource Group, the field director will manage archaeologists in-field during the execution of a wide range of archaeological projects.
Your role will include the full range of CRM responsibilities, including project design, coordination and execution of fieldwork for a wide range of clients and programs, report preparation and review, and limited team management responsibilities.
Candidates must exhibit a keen awareness of workplace safety and possess the capability to work independently under minimal supervision.
This role is tailored for flexibility, offering remote and hybrid work options out of any of our offices in Southern California.
Your Responsibilities Oversee cultural resource field projects of varying levels of size and complexity, ensuring tasks are conducted in conformity with Stantec's technical standards. Exercise independent judgment and coordination of complex tasks. Field-direct tasks and teams, ensuring timely and budget-compliant completion Collect comprehensive and well-organized field data, draft DPRs and technical reports Facilitate client compliance with state and federal regulations Active involvement in Health, Safety, and Environment (HSSE) policies and practices Offer supervision, training, and mentorship to junior staff, fostering technical and professional growth. Demonstrate leadership in striving to improve technical performance Devise effective solutions for project challenges. Qualifications Your Capabilities and Credentials Comprehensive experience in all aspects of archaeological fieldwork, in-depth knowledge of California's prehistory and history. Ability to effectively coordinate and lead field teams, maintaining an effective workflow and clear communications with your team and the Principal Investigator. Experience with technical writing, technical problem-solving, and solid communication skills. Demonstrated experience and knowledge of environmental policy and regulation (i.e., NEPA, NHPA, CEQA) Self-awareness of technical and/or professional abilities and the ability to determine when assistance from Subject Matter Experts is needed. Ability to follow written and verbal direction on project delivery Proactive in fostering a safe work environment, and able to convey safety information to field staff Proficiency in digital field data collection tools like GPS, ESRI Collector, and Survey 123. Commitment to technical excellence and continuous improvement. Valid driver's license and a good driving record. BA degree (or higher) in Anthropology 4 to 8 years of relevant professional experience in cultural resource management, with a preference for California archaeological experience Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA) credential (preferred but not required) Willingness to travel for fieldwork, up to 75% time Ability to work in typical field conditions, including variable weather and lifting items up to 50 lbs. positions, including crew chief, field director, field PI Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time.

Salary Range(s): CA Other Areas $25.91 Per Hour - CA Other Areas $40.34 Per Hour Min/Max Pay Range for postings located in CA (SF Area includes SF, SJS & WLC)
The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location.
At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.
