Area Coordinator for Residential Life

Full-time, 12-month annual renewable position, $43,500 - $49,000 depending on experience and qualifications

This person will required to live in an assigned on-campus apartment

Position Overview:
Reporting to the Assistant Director for Residential Education and the Assistant Director for Student Success & Multicultural Education, the Area Coordinator-Residential Multicultural Programming (ACRMP) contributes to creating a vibrant campus community characterized by a strong commitment to equity, inclusion, and belonging for students with diverse identities with special focus to students in UMC's residence hall facilities. The ACRMP is a full time (9-month), entry-level professional required to live in an assigned on-campus apartment and serve in the on-duty rotation with other department staff. The ACRMP is responsible for the development and implementation of department initiatives that support student learning, engagement, belonging, and persistence. The ACRMP is expected to have weekly evening and occasional weekend commitments, to travel on behalf of the department periodically, and to work in the event of University closure or reduced operations as needed.

Functions and Duties
Leadership and Administration (25%)
Demonstrated self-awareness of one's own cultural beliefs, perspectives, and privileges as a part of one's orientation toward leadership.
Acknowledge the specific and particular realities of faculty and students of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and other minoritized communities with Northwest Minnesota while also connecting communities to local and regional experiences in order to foster a greater sense of belonging.
Generate mutual solidarity among historically underrepresented populations including but not limited to various racial and ethnic groups, first-generation college students, students from rural and agrarian communities, students from low-income families, LGBTQ+ students, students with disabilities, and religious minorities.
Assist with planning, facilitating, and assessing anti-racism, equity, and inclusion professional development experiences on campus.
Responsible for the training, supervision and evaluation of student staff.
Directly supervise and evaluate Community Advisor staff (may include summer staff). Hold intentional one-on-one meetings. Plan and facilitate regular staff meetings.
Participate in and present training topics for Community Advisors during fall/winter training and throughout the academic year.
Serve as a resource on University and departmental policies and procedures.
Assist the Assistant Director in the recruitment and selection of Community Advisors
Coordinates the recruitment of students for other engagement and leadership opportunities
Attend residential life staff meetings and actively participate in Community Advisor training.
Maintain and improve the physical environment of the residence community in conjunction with the Assistant Director. Ensure all safety, security, and maintenance needs are reported to appropriate personnel. Develop regular communication practices with custodial and maintenance staff.
Assist in the implementation of administrative functions within area (e.g. room assignments, no-shows, room changes, room condition records, damage billing,) in conjunction with the Assistant Director. Perform tasks in accordance with established Residential Life procedures and deadlines.
Maintain an inviting office space, pending return to in-person operation.
Assist in the implementation of all residence hall openings and closings throughout the year.
Assist in the management of residents undergoing quarantine/isolation due to COVID-19.
Manage duty system for Community Advisor staff.
Represent Residential Life on University work groups, task forces, and committees.
Assist in student retention efforts.
Partner with other student affairs educators to deliver programs and services to residential students.
Student/Community Development (50%)

Work with department staff and students to create and maintain a living and learning environment that supports the mission of the University of Minnesota Crookston Office of Residential Life.
Actively assist in the development and implementation of an intentional community development model that includes an emphasis on diverse, equitable, and inclusive community programming and support.
Establish an academic focused environment by creating campus partnerships, implementing initiatives, and providing tools to Community Advisors that supports student academic success.
Serve as a conduct hearing officer utilizing a restorative justice approach to sanctioning.
Assist in student leadership development. Be active and visible in support of student initiatives. Examples include collaboration with Multicultural Affairs, advising one of our identity-based organizations, etc.
Develop working knowledge of campus and community resources. Serve as an educator and general resource in a compassionate manner when intervening with students regarding a variety of issues including: college transition, academic and personal experiences, roommate conflicts/challenges, intimate partner/sexual violence, and mental health crises.
Confront behavior that is not appropriate in residence hall and apartment communities, per Community Behavioral Standards.
Maintain communication with faculty, staff, and other administrative personnel as needed.
Participate in an "on-duty" rotation to provide support for students and student staff. Being on duty may require quick on-site response throughout Residential Life facilities.
Assist Assistant Director in developing and maintaining departmental processes
Responsible for tracking student compliance with mandatory Alcohol EDU and Sexual Assault Prevention trainings.
Responsible for providing residential statistics for Clery Act reporting annually.
Participate in specific department-wide committees and functions.
Represent Residential Life at admission events and orientation.
Assist in the selection of full-time positions in Residential Life.
Assist in the management and implementation of Residential Life summer operations (conferences, senior program, summer school students).
Assist in the execution of departmental emergency response procedures.
Assist Housing & Residential Life in other areas as assigned.
Multicultural Programming (25%)

Responsible for evening and weekend international and multicultural programming that provides opportunities for students to share their culture and contribute to a diverse residential community.
Responsible for meeting with identity-based student organizations.
Develop and implement diversity and inclusion programs and workshops that build awareness and foster understanding among members of the residential community including student leaders, residents, and professional staff.
Develop innovative ways to increase student engagement and learning in diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree plus at least one year of experience and knowledge of housing operations on a college/university campus.
Demonstrated self-awareness, cultural competence, and achievement in working with diverse student populations.
Demonstrated commitment to the land-grant mission of the University of Minnesota Crookston, especially as related to access and student success.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Proven ability to work collaboratively with faculty, student affairs educators, and students.
Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in student affairs, counseling or a closely related area.
One year of experience (including undergraduate employment) in residential life, student affairs, or a closely related field.
Experience in higher education providing service to college students with diverse identities including first-generation college students; students of various racial, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds; students from low-income families; students from rural communities; LGBTQ students; and non-traditional adult learners.
Proficiency in a second language, preferably Spanish.
