Categories:  Student Affairs & Services, Full Time PAY GRADE: 30E CONTEXT OF THE JOB: Under the limited direction of Director for Residential Communities, the Assistant Director will lead all areas of student staff selection and development. The Assistant Director will serve as a member of the RLH Leadership Team and will develop and enhance the capacity and competence of professional, graduate, and undergraduate staff within assigned residential areas through innovative training and development techniques. The incumbent will also assume key roles in department decision-making and coordination of roles through a participative leadership approach. The Assistant Director directs the efforts of all residence hall staff within these areas (3-5 FTE). Through supervision of staff, student support, and student advocacy, the Assistant Director serves as a champion for the student experience in their assigned residence halls.
Position duties are fulfilled within a 24-hour, 7 day per week operation and require periodic evening and weekend time commitments.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: • Directly supervise and further the development of 3-5 Master's level Residence Hall Coordinators (RHCs) in their work to enhance student learning and support through engagement, student led programs, and sound management of assigned residence halls.
• Direct and indirectly supervise an additional 10-12 RHCs related to student staff selection and evaluation.
• Review all incident reports generated from assigned residence halls and oversee effective case response by home Residence Hall Coordinators. Escalate highly unique and high-risk situations where appropriate. Assess student behavior trends in respective communities and formulate response (educational and student conduct) to student concerns. Maintain effective outreach and referral efforts for long-term crisis recovery or mental health concerns. Implement University and department protocols related to Sexual Misconduct response. Educate staff and students about the University Code of Conduct, Residence Hall Regulations, and fire and safety codes. Monitor incident response trends by Resident Assistant staff and initiate interventions when necessary.
• Coordinate on-site and front-line response to crisis situations, including those that are highly complex in nature and may be life threatening. Assume a case management role with students
experiencing long-term mental health challenges. Provide non-clinical student counseling, crisis intervention, and referral services. Direct RHC and RA crisis response efforts within the Upper Division area. Assume University-wide on-call roles and act as primary contact and decision maker for all student crises in compliance with University protocols, State and Federal laws.
• Provide live-in staff members with direction in day-to-day operations management for the residence halls within scope of responsibility: Opening and closing of halls, key and security systems management, custodial and maintenance issues, occupancy management, and room change process.
• Lead the design, coordinate the logistics, and annually evaluate all aspects of student staff recruitment, application, appraisals, and selection processes for 200 staff members. This includes differentiated processes for new Resident Assistant (RA) applicants, staff returning to current RA positions, staff seeking promotions to Office Manager (OM) or Senior Resident Assistant (SRA) positions, and Graduate Assistants (GA). Oversee process for hiring and managing other student staff positions of Desk Assistants, Interns, or Office Workers.
• Work with Administrative Specialist for Human Resources and Payroll to ensure proper completion of human resources and payroll processes for student hiring.
• Functionally supervise 1 administrative assistant with position responsibilities related to staff selection and training.
• Develop and administer assigned budgets.
• Assist with the development and implementation of annual RHC and all-staff July and on-going training program.
• Participate in all RLH department-wide efforts such as strategic plan goals, residence hall openings and closings, and committee roles within RLH and the Division of Student Life.
