Functions Area of Responsibilities

*ASSESSMENT AND CARE: Follows standards of nursing care and policies related to assessment and patient care.
Uses critical thinking skills to effectively assess patient and determine nursing care needs.
Demonstrates ability to provide technical assistance to physicians during surgical invasive procedures based on departmental policy and or established national standards (AORN, TJC, ASPAN, SGNA, AAMI).


*LEADERSHIP: responsible for assessing staffing requirements for the current and oncoming shifts and assures adequate staffing on all nursing staffs commensurate with patient needs and nursing staff education and abilities.
Facilitate use of scheduled staff in a manner which facilitates effective patient flow and efficient use of resources.
Provides leadership in absence of manager or director.
Collaborates with Nurse Manager, Director, and Supervisor regarding staffing and nursing personnel issues.
Assures quality nursing care through rounds and ongoing unit supervision.
Role models and interdisciplinary collaborative approach to patient care through interactions with other departments.
Coordinates implementation of Disaster Plans.
Effectively handles situations in a calm, objective manner and coordinates needed change.
Adaptable, flexible, and consistently effective in staffing and managing problems.
Challenges and adapts systems to maximize the benefits for patient care.
Collaborates with physicians and other disciplines to implement intervention to meet emerging problems.
Supervises care given by professional and nonprofessional personnel, providing instruction as needed.
Regularly attends unit conferences and makes recommendations for improvement in patient care via the patient care conference and unit conference

*QUALITY, PI, STANDARDS AND COMPLIANCE: Knowledgeable regarding hospital policy and procedures, regulatory standards, evidence-based practice guidelines (EMTALA, TJC, CMS, Georgia and Alabama Board of Nursing, quality metrics, etc.)
Knowledgeable in the review of data within the electronic record.
Assists director and managers in the identification, coordination and implementation and monitoring of unit specific process improvement opportunities which minimize errors, improve patient safety and satisfaction, maximize resource utilization and provide a safe work environment.
Demonstrates knowledge of own role in patient safety, recognizing unsafe practice.
Displays knowledge of the National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG).
