Job Summary: The College of Pharmacy is recruiting for a Community Pharmacy Faculty member at the Assistant/Associate Professor rank.
Primary Purpose: Responsible for assisting in the establishment of curriculum, subject matter, and methods of instruction and those aspects of student life that relate to the educational process.Promote, by precept and example, a general atmosphere within the College of respect for knowledge, thought and inquiry.The faculty member has the right and obligation to participate in scheduled meetings of the General Faculty. Election to the Faculty Senate and election or appointment to committees should be considered a privilege and faculty members are encouraged to share in these responsibilities.Contribute to the planning, development and evaluation of courses and academic programs within the College.Responsible for establishing clerkship rotations and serving as preceptor for Pharm.D. students.Conduct/participate in pharmacy practice research endeavors.Support the organizational goals and objectives of the College of Pharmacy and Western University of Health Sciences.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Expertise in the area of Community Pharmacy Practice.Ability to communicate effectively both with groups and individuals.Ability to interact effectively with people of all backgrounds, including students, administration, faculty and staff.Ability to handle detail-oriented assignments and maintain confidentiality.Ability to handle a wide range of responsibilities in the college environment.Required Qualifications: EDUCATION: Pharm.D. degree.EXPERIENCE: Consistent with current College promotion and tenure documents.Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to those individuals who have completed a residency or fellowship in Community Pharmacy Practice, or those who have a professional interest/experience in Community Pharmacy Practice, and those who have experience in teaching and/or research; publications; and presentation.Key Responsibilities: Education responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Maintaining intellectual integrity and striving for academic excellence in his/her teaching.Providing students, at the beginning of each block, with a syllabus, indicating materials to be covered, related assignments, and methods of evaluation.Promoting adequate standards of linguistic expression in writing and in speech.Maintaining up-to-date records of the grades of each student in his/her blocks.Serving as a block facilitator as assigned.Collaborating with the block facilitator in planning the block, teaching, and conducting student evaluation and block evaluation.Providing lectures/instruction to Pharm.D. students.Contributing to the curricular content in collaboration with other faculty members.Evaluating student performance using both traditional methods (e.g., written tests) and non-traditional methods (e.g., student portfolios).Providing instruction in other WesternU programs.Documenting outcomes and appropriateness of all teaching/research activities on an ongoing basis.Developing elective courses in his/her areas of expertise.Scholarship responsibilities include but are not limited to: Developing and implementing an extramurally funded research program, individually or in collaboration with other researchers.Contributing to the body of knowledge in his/her area of expertise. This can be achieved by preparing publications for refereed/peer-reviewed journals.Conducting research on new methods of teaching.College and University responsibilities include but are not limited to: Serving on university and college committees.Developing an annual portfolio of accomplishments in the areas of service, education, scholarship and professional development.Participating in any special projects or activities as assigned.Developing and maintaining good working relationships with all staff, faculty, and students in the College of Pharmacy and other colleges and divisions of the University.Conducting oneself in a positive and professional manner; representing the college and the university appropriately.Serving as faculty advisor for student professional organizations, clubs and societies.Serving on evaluation panels or teams, such as grant or protocol review panels, site visit teams, educational panels, and academic program evaluation teams.Serving as an advisor to pharmacy students.Participating in college and university functions and student-sponsored programs.Serving as and advisor/mentor to less-experienced faculty (e.g., those at the assistant professor level), when requested.Professional development responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Participating actively in appropriate professional and scientific organizations.Demonstrating on-going skill development in the area of scholarship, and developing a national presence in his/her area of expertise.Participating actively in the development and implementation of entrepreneurial activities within the college and university.Working to become a master teacher.Marginal Job Functions: Performing other duties and projects as assigned.Clinical practice site responsibilities include but are not limited to: Developing and/or maintaining a clinical practice site conducive to clerkship rotations for Pharm.D. students.Serving as primary preceptor for assigned Western University of Health Sciences Pharm.D. students on experiential rotation, which includes, but is not limited to providing orientation to the practice site, ensuring student engagement with patient care activities suitable for the site/rotation, providing experiential clinical and other student teaching relevant to the rotation, and evaluation of the student per the college standard procedures.Developing and maintaining good working relationships with others at the clinical practice site.Documenting interventions and patient care interactions as required by the clinical practice site standards.Work Schedule: This is an exempt faculty appointment; work hours are determined by the needs of the mission of the college. Evening and weekend work hours are required as needed. Local, national, and international travel is required as needed.
