The ideal candidateshould possess a robust and productive background in aquatic sciences and/orlimnology with a special emphasis on water quality in managed aquaculturesystems.
The successful applicant will play a pivotal role inadvancing a competitive, extramurally funded research program that aligns with theexpertise of our current research initiatives. Key areas of focus may includewater quality management and applied ecology of channel catfish aquacultureponds. Areas of emphasis may include management of phytoplankton communitydynamics, control of environment-derived off-flavors, aeration and dissolvedoxygen management, pond sediment ecology, and aquaculture effluent management.The applicant is encouraged to partner with engineering faculty to developapplied systems to improve aquaculture efficiency.
In addition to conducting innovative research, the appointed faculty member isencouraged to mentor graduate students. They are expected to take an activerole in fostering collaborations with established programs at DREC and WFA.These collaborations aim to enhance ongoing projects and foster the developmentof new research endeavors, all contributing to the overarching mission of theCenter. The successful candidate will contribute to the vibrant academic andresearch environment at TCNWAC, furthering the Center's commitment toexcellence in aquaculture and water quality and ecology.
Requirements1. Earned a Ph.D. in aquatic sciences, aquaculture,limnology, or fisheries science with a special emphasis in water quality andecology (all but degree's [ABDs] will be considered).
2. A background in engaging with external stakeholdergroups is highly desirable.
3. Applicant must be an individual who is exceptionallyorganized, detail-oriented, and possesses a proven track record of impactfulresearch within the realm of limnology/water quality, as evidenced by relevantpublications.
4. Demonstrate proficiency in various laboratory and fieldtechniques, chemistry, ecology, appropriate quantitative analysis, andapplication of research to management scenarios.
5. The successful candidate must exhibit a high level ofcollaboration and teamwork, with a documented record of securing extramuralsupport and scholarly achievements.
Preferred qualifications include excellent written and oralcommunication skills, a potential to secure extramural funding, a history ofpublications, and a desire to mentor students. Researchand Extension faculty work cooperatively to solve crop and aquacultureproduction problems and transfer new information and technology to areaproducers. Aboutthe Thad Cochran National Warmwater Aquaculture Center: The Thad Cochran National WarmwaterAquaculture Center (NWAC) was established to provide solutions to the mostpressing problems of the aquaculture industry through basic and appliedresearch, Extension, and diagnostic services. The cooperative programs of theUSDA ARS Warmwater Aquaculture Research Unit, Mississippi Agricultural andForestry Experiment Station, Mississippi State University Extension Service,and MSU College of Veterinary Medicine serve as the base of the U.S. catfishresearch and Extension programs. TheNWAC facilities include 283 earthen ponds (294 acres) ranging in size from 0.1to 9 acres, a 32,000 square foot office/laboratory building, 6,000 square footaquaria building, 8,000 square foot nutrition laboratory, a pathogen-freeholding building, genetics complex, raceways, shops, and storage buildings.There are 14 MSU and USDA scientists on staff as well as 40 support staff.
