The Political Science Department at San Diego State University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Mexican and/or Central American Politics at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin Fall 2025. Applicants should demonstrate a well-developed research agenda, a promise of sustained scholarship, and a record of effective teaching.
Qualifications
The department seeks a scholar with expertise in the politics of Mexico or Central America broadly understood. We are open on theoretical and methodological approaches and welcome scholars trained in comparative politics or international relations. The successful candidate's geographic scope of research will focus on one or more countries in the region while substantive topics can include, but are not limited to, the politics of inequality, development, indigenous politics, environmental politics, state/society relations, immigration/migration, militarization, social movements, or human rights. The successful candidate will have sufficient expertise to teach and mentor on the politics of Mexico.
As part of a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) located on the US-Mexico border, we value research and teaching that are grounded in the politics of neighboring countries that have deep historical, economic, and political ties to the US and to Southern California. The candidate would be expected to offer a range of courses serving political science and associated disciplines and might also collaborate with interdisciplinary programs such as the Center for Latin American Studies, Sustainability, ISCOR (International Security and Conflict Resolution), or the Mesoamerican Studies Center in Oaxaca.
The Political Science Department at San Diego State is dedicated to the ideal of the engaged teacher-scholar. We are seeking applicants with demonstrated experience in and/or commitment to teaching and working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of underrepresented groups. A completed file includes a letter of interest, a curriculum vitae, graduate transcripts, complete teaching evaluations (quantitative evaluations and complete sets of qualitative evaluations of recent courses), sample syllabi, academic writing samples, diversity statement, and three letters of recommendation. The minimum salary for this position is based on the current CSU salary schedule for Assistant Professors and may be revised based on contract collective bargaining. The anticipated salary range is from $82,000-$87,000. Salary placement will be based on the selected candidate's qualifications and experience, and salaries higher than the published maximums may be offered in limited circumstances.
