Job Description:
The Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, Environmental and Plant Sciences at The State University of New York College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill (SUNY Cobleskill) invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Plant Science to begin January 2025. This position is a full-time, 10-month, tenure-track appointment.
This position is a full-time tenure track (ten-month) teaching appointment; with the successful candidate teaching at the undergraduate level, including courses in Woody Plant Materials, Botany 1, and Botany 2. These courses are listed as ORHT 121 Woody Plant Materials, BIOL 116 Botany 1 and BIOL 117 Botany 2 in the college catalog. Most department courses include equal instruction time in a lecture format and an applied lab format. Additionally, there is an opportunity to offer new courses addressing our emerging needs, including Intro to Plant Systematics, Tree Structure and Function, Silviculture, Forest Biometrics, and Sustainable Harvesting Practices.
Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities Must be able to teach Botany, Woody Plant Materials (dendrology), and Plant Systematics; these are entry-level courses and include laboratory courses.Faculty members are responsible for curriculum, teaching, service, scholarship, and related administrative activities that support the mission, values, and goals of the college.Requirements: Minimum Qualifications A Master's Degree in Plant Biology, Botany, Forestry, Forest Ecology, Plant Science, Horticulture or a related field.Knowledge of Northeastern forests and landscape woody plants, dendrology, silviculture, and botany.The ability to work with faculty in an interdisciplinary setting.Professional teaching capacities thru effective communication and interpersonal skills.Ability to work both independently and as part of a departmental team.The ability to prepare and implement applied and field laboratory exercises.Preferred Qualifications In addition to the aforementioned minimum qualifications, it is preferred the candidate also have:
An earned doctorate or A.B.D. (all but dissertation) in Plant Biology, Botany, Forestry, Forest Ecology, Plant Science, Horticulture or a related field.Professional background in or previous verifiable teaching experience of Woody Plant Identification, Forestry, or Botany.1-2 years of demonstrated excellence in college teaching or industry-based training delivery.Interest in grant writing and other external support opportunities.Interest in applied research, particularly in mentoring undergraduate researchers.Commitment to experiential learning with the use of engaging pedagogies and diverse teaching modes.Additional Information:
This is a full-time tenure track, 10-month appointment. This position is to start in January 2025. Compensation is $55,000-$60,000 per year. This position offers full New York State benefits which are some of the most comprehensive in the country.
