Reporting to the Associate Provost for Graduate Affairs, the Assistant Provost for Graduate and Postdoctoral Professional Development provides leadership and vision to define the mission, goals, and objectives for career and professional development programs that serve graduate students and postdocs across the University.
This position supervises three Director-level FTEs that oversee programs for three distinct audience's masters and professional students, PhD students, and postdoctoral scholars.
The Assistant Provost is also expected to be a visible national leader in professional development, contributing research and scholarship as appropriate to the goals and outcomes of our programs, and should be engaged with other leaders in this field.
Essential functions:
1.
Leadership and strategy: Leads the vision and strategy for graduate and postdoctoral professional development; engages, solicits input, and synthesizes contributions from multiple University partners; provides guidance to University partners and administration around professional development priorities; leads and/or serves on University working groups or taskforces related to issues concerning graduate student or postdoctoral professional or career development.

Program creation, implementation, and evaluation: Oversees the creation of new and innovative opportunities for programming that advances the mission for graduate education and postdoctoral training; identifies and operationalizes partnerships across units at Boston University and externally to enhance the programming BU offers; oversees evaluation of our signature programs, including development of key metrics and evaluation plans, instrument design, data collection and management, data analysis, and dissemination of findings; leverages evaluation data to drive quality improvement in programs.

Operations management: Ensures the quality and efficiency of day-to-day operations; directly supervises 3 FTE plus assigns tasks to undergraduate student workers; manages recruitment, hiring, and staff professional development; determines budget priorities and allocate resources based on those priorities annually.

National leadership in professional development: develops relationships with units at peer institutions across the nation; serves on advisory boards in organizations related to either professional development; engages the national community in collaborations around research, scholarship, funding, and innovative and successful programs, to ensure Boston University is at the forefront of professional development for graduate students and postdocs.

Scholarship, research, and new grants: identifies and pursues individual and collaborative opportunities for funding and research both internally and externally; publishes research and other scholarship in peer-reviewed journals; disseminates research at conferences and other appropriate venues.

Direct interactions with students and postdocs: Leads professional development workshops and events or hold 1:1 consultation meetings with graduate students and postdocs in collaboration with team members.

Required Skills
Qualifications:
PhD required.
5-8 years of experience in academic administrative roles focused on graduate and postdoctoral professional development.
Role requires extensive program development and project management experience.
Strong leadership and communication skills are needed to be able to lead a team effectively and communicate with a variety of partners, from executive level University leadership to the graduate students and postdoctoral scholars served by the office.
Strategic thinking, data analysis, and problem-solving skills are required.
