Position Purpose

The Associate Vice President for Inclusion and Strategic Engagement (AVP), in close consultation with the Senior Vice President & Senior Diversity Officer (SVP/SDO), will assist in coordinating the implementation and assessment of goals and strategic priorities of IDE as well as the implementation of institution wide strategy plans furthering Dartmouth's commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) and its critical connection to academic excellence. In this role, the AVP will provide day to day partnership and consultancy across campus in support of Dartmouth's efforts to develop a more diverse and inclusive campus community where all members feel valued.
The candidate will be an integral member of IDE, with primary responsibilities for internal operations and consistent maintenance of the DEIB programming of the division. This includes supporting the oversight of a sustained communication strategy (web, print, media) and ensuring the continuation and evaluation of leading signature programs of IDE.
The AVP will support the SVP/SDOs vision and implementation of a divisional approach to the work that incorporates IDE's current structure and anticipated future in an ever-evolving higher education landscape. The AVP will serve as a member of the IDE leadership team.

Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp

PhD or equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Terminal degree (PhD, JD, etc.) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
5-7 years of progressively responsible administrative experience with management in designing, delivering, evaluating and/or leading activities, programs and services related to institutional diversity, equity, inclusion, and/or social justice.
Experience supervising a team of skilled employees in a fast-paced working environment.
Proven ability to effectively navigate through change and comfortability facing headwinds in higher education.
Demonstrated experience effectively working and establishing rapport with diverse populations with strong working knowledge of social justice theories and scholarship.
Experience demonstrating diversity and inclusion's core connection to academic excellence.
Fluency with the prevailing and emerging trends in higher education and knowledge and application of evidenced based practices in diversity and inclusion programming and training.
Effective project management, organization, and analytical skills.
Excellent communication (oral and written) skills, and an ability to effectively engage and present to a wide variety of constituents, both internally and externally.
Excellent interpersonal skills with exceptional listening skills and high emotional intelligence.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work both independently and under the direction of the SVP/SDO.
Experience writing and executing strategic project plans with expertise in leading ongoing assessments.
Ability and willingness to work flexible hours, including some nights and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated experience leading diversity and inclusion initiatives in a competitive research university setting.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion through involvement in regional and/or national organizations.
Expansive approach to DEIB that includes a domestic and global framework.

Key Accountabilities

Description

Strategic coordination and operational management

The AVP will take a lead role in executing the SVP/SDO's strategic vision for DEIB at Dartmouth, working in close partnership with staff and faculty departmental leaders across all academic and administrative units, including the graduate and professional schools. The AVP will ensure the implementation and evaluation of the institutional strategic planning process with clear milestones and measures for advancement and success. This includes the ongoing assessment of progress in Toward Equity (and subsequent DEI strategy plans) through regular meetings with named responsible offices and campus wide DEI practitioners. The AVP manages the institutional DEIB strategy plan, the process of drafting annual reports, and evaluating the overall impact of the work.
The AVP will manage staff that coordinate major functions of the division (signature programs such as Inclusion Champions and employee resource networks). The AVP will ensure continuity of all critical business functions for IDE including serving as the budget steward for strategic initiatives within their purview in consultation with the SVP/SDO and Chief of Staff. They will also represent IDE on councils, committees, and other institutional working groups, creating interventions to address culture and climate challenges, and building capacity across campus to support this work. The AVP will play an active role in the recruitment, selection, training, developing, and support of constituents involved in IDE boards and councils. Serve in SVPs stead as requested and appropriate.

Description

Develop and maintain partnerships and key initiatives

The AVP will cultivate institutional partnerships to support strategic goals that center diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. In partnership with University Human Resources and the Office of the Provost, the AVP will design effective strategies to promote inclusive hiring of staff and faculty by identifying best practices for recruitment, hiring, promotion, professional development and retention of employees. The AVP will also lead the development and dissemination of professional development for concepts related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. This includes learning opportunities for leaders at all levels at Dartmouth.
The AVP will oversee IDE's signature programs related to advancing diversity and inclusion (Social Justice Awards, Inclusion Champions, Employee Resources Networks, etc). In the long term, they will assist the SVP/SDO with establishing Dartmouth as a thought leader in diversity and inclusion in higher education utilizing a domestic and global lens. Time permitting, provide guidance and facilitation of federal and foundation grant proposals with campus partners as a means of furthering campus diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Description

Co-facilitate the campus climate survey process

In collaboration with the IDE Director of Assessment and Evaluation, the AVP will assist with leading, coordinating and ensuring that efforts to assess campus needs and campus climate related to diversity, equity and inclusion occur on a regular basis; analyze and communicate the results of these assessments; and assist the SVP with guiding the campus towards viable action in service of positive change. This includes leading new survey initiatives to gather data about the campus climate in consultation with the Office of Institutional Research, allocating funds to support follow through on the actions, and serving as a thought partner as related initiatives are created.

Description

Lead sustained communication strategy

The AVP will manage the development and maintenance of IDE communication strategies (web, print, media, etc.) to enhance visibility of available resources and to promote the institutions best practices and programs related to diversity and inclusion in consultation with the communications manager. In collaboration with the Chief of Staff, the AVP will review all major reports developed and disseminated by IDE to ensure consistency in style and branding. The AVP will work closely with IDE's communication manager to collaborate with the Office of University Communications to publicize, promote and share the Institutional Diversity and Equity's efforts with both internal and external campus constituents, as well as provide education and raise awareness on issues of diversity and equity.
