General Description and Classification Standards Under the general direction of the Transportation Engineering Directors of Signs & Markings and Signal and Street Light Maintenance and Operations, this position will perform a variety of research, data entry, project review, and organizational tasks related to these offices, and other duties as assigned. This is a five-day workweek position, 40 hours per week is required.
Supervision Received This position will report directly to the Transportation Engineering Director. May work independently or as part of a team that meets to discuss issues related to traffic signals, streetlights, and traffic signs. The direction received is very general, focuses on strategic objectives, and is typically collaborative in nature.
The following duties are normal for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Shadow multiple office positions and train in a variety of tasks including, but not limited to.
Prepares and checks detailed plans, design calculations, cost estimations, and recommendations prepared by other engineers for completeness, mathematical accuracy, and conformity to engineering practices and standards. Compiles and analyzes engineering data and prepares conclusions and recommendations. Develops data for public review, hearings, or informational meetings. Determines the validity and reliability of testing methods and procedures.  Maintains records and prepares reports and correspondence related to the work. Discuss plans, specifications, and work schedules with contractors, utility companies, and other governmental agencies. May perform or oversee the survey, staking, layout, and inspection of construction projects. Uses technology to monitor traffic flow and conditions. Designs and prepares preliminary and final plans for highways, bridges, drainage structures, municipal utilities, roadway lighting, traffic control devices, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), and miscellaneous highway facilities. Provides input for the development and maintenance of traffic management policies and procedures. Participates in studies to determine the sufficiency of existing highway systems and structures and programming of future construction. Investigates traffic problems and recommends methods to improve traffic flow and safety. Estimates cost of projects and writes contracts and specifications for labor, materials, and equipment. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities - This is a partial listing of necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job successfully. It is not an exhaustive list. Ability to have effective verbal and written communication. 
Ability to carry out instructions and deliver work products with minimal supervision and promptly. 
Working knowledge of research and basic statistical techniques as well as MS Office 
Aptitude for transportation, land use and development-related matters, attention to detail, and, above all, critical thinking capabilities
Ability to effectively communicate and interact with management, employees, and members of the public. 
Ability to read, write, understand, and interpret reports and related materials, assemble information, and make written reports and documents in a concise, clear, and effective manner. 
Ability to comprehend procedures and related information.
