Job Description
BATES ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, Laboratory for Nuclear Science-MIT-Bates Research and Engineering Center, to provide on-site leadership and oversee operations, including managing existing activities and developing proposals for new activities. Will engage with MIT and external stakeholders to gather information to develop and implement strategic plans; write proposals and progress reports; develop budgets; track project milestones and spending; participate in and make presentations; and serve as the point of contact for sponsors, those interested in siting their projects at MIT-Bates, and MIT central offices. May participate in activities as a researcher. The MIT-Bates team currently consists of fifteen engineers, technicians, and administrative staff. MIT-Bates (https://bateslab.mit.edu/about) hosts an array of research projects associated with multiple MIT departments, ranging from experimental nuclear and particle physics, through applications of accelerators, to climate change mitigation. Its primary focus is to provide engineering and technical support for a wide variety of nuclear physics experiments of importance to the U.S. Department of Energy, involving a broad spectrum of researchers from MIT and collaborating institutions. Job Requirements
REQUIRED: master's or Ph.D. in physics or a bachelor's in engineering; fifteen years' experience in a technical field, including five years' supervisory experience; proven leadership experience successfully managing technical research projects, including costs, schedules, personnel, and reporting; experience and research interests that align with present and planned MIT-Bates research activities; excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; self-motivation; and ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously. PREFERRED: Ph.D. in physics or master's in engineering/engineering management; experience at a national laboratory/university; experience with environment, health, and safety; and project management certification.
