The Wistar Institute is a world leader in early-stage discovery science in the areas of cancer, immunology, and infectious disease.
Wistar is committed to accelerating research advances from bench to bedside through brilliant science and distinctive approaches to collaboration among scientific investigators and academic and industry partners.
Wistar's dynamic environment supports the advancement of discoveries that will change the future of human health.
The Wistar Institute has an opening for a Bioinformatics Technician to join the Bioinformatics Shared Resource (Core) of our NCI-designated Cancer Center.
The Bioinformatics Core provides Wistar investigators with expertise in computational analyses of biomedical research data as well as database management and software applications support.
The Bioinformatics Technician will: Analyze or manipulate bioinformatics data using existing algorithms, software packages, statistical applications, or data mining techniques.
Extend existing software programs to implement novel data analysis algorithms.
Maintain awareness of new and emerging computational methods and technologies.
Enter or retrieve information from structural databases, protein sequence motif databases, mutation databases, genomic databases or gene expression databases.
Participate in the preparation of reports or scientific publications.
Create data management or error-checking procedures and user manuals.
Execute special projects as assigned.
Attend project meetings as appropriate.
Master's degree in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology/Biomedical Sciences or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
Candidates should have prior experience in programming languages (e.g.
Python or Perl), experience in R or Matlab statistical environments, and experience in Bioinformatics data analysis of high throughput data (next generation sequencing, microarrays, proteomics).
The Wistar Institute is located in the University City area of Philadelphia, in the heart of the University of Pennsylvania Campus.
Wistar provides resources to its faculty and staff that enable them to conduct cutting edge collaborative research and provides for outstanding intellectual environments and state-of-the-art facilities.
Research discoveries conducted at Wistar have led to the development of vaccines; the identification of genes associated with cancers; and the development of many other significant research technologies and tools.
We offer a competitive salary and an excellent benefits package.
