Follows standard operating procedures for the grossing of small specimens, quality control, and quality assurance.

Reports to: Medical Director, Lab Manager, Lead Tech, and Pathologists.

Works closely with: Pathologists, RGAL Path Lab staff, and other USDH staff JOB QUALIFICATIONS A.
Education Training that meets all regulatory requirements of CLIA, CAP, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Specifically, the requirements for high complexity testing, which includes one of the following: Bachelors degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution; Associate degree in a laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or with a current HT, HTL, or MLT (ASCP) registration, or equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting the requirements as defined in the CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489 (see NOTE 2).

Experience Prefer three years of laboratory experience at a hospital or private laboratory but not required.
C. Licenses, certifications and/or registrations HT, HTL, or MLT (ASCP), or equivalent experience and training preferred but not required.
RESPONSIBILITIES Describes, measures, and inks specimens according to specified protocols.
Microtomy is artifact free.
Staining procedures are accurate and precise, resulting in a diagnostic slide.
Operates and maintains computer and laboratory equipment according to USDH and laboratory procedures.
Performs Q/C and Q/A documentation as required.
Utilizes and stores supplies efficiently.
Notifies supervisor when additional supplies are needed.
Daily workload is completed within scheduled shift.
Prioritizes tasks for the efficient use of laboratory resources and technician time.
Expedites STAT specimens.
Files blocks and slides.
Retrieves items upon request.
Disposes of hazardous chemicals per regulatory guidelines.
Maintains and understands laboratory inspection guidelines.
Follows safety regulations set by OSHA and CAP guidelines.
Follows HIPAA regulation standards set by USDH.
Embeds tissues accurately to produce sections that appropriately demonstrate cells.
Cross-train and share knowledge; assist in orienting others.
Performs other duties as assigned.HISTOLOGY TECHNICIAN PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Education: Accredited high school diploma (and 60 semester hours of post-high school education including a minimum of 24 hours or science courses to be eligible for high-complexity testing.
Histologic Technician training at a certified training program/healthcare careers college or equivalent experience meets the high complexity requirement.

Maintains knowledge of, and complies with, established policies and procedures.
SPECIFIC: Accurately enters all required information presented on USDH or client specific requisitions into the laboratory information system.
Keep current files on data concerning histologic and histopathologic methods and procedures.
Accurately prepares histologic slides for diagnosis by Pathologist.
Identifies, prepares, cuts, stains, and preserves specimens for examination.
Receives and processes specimens from surgical or diagnostic cases.
Identifies specimens and accurately logs them into the database.
Records number of blocks and slides prepared each day required for statistics.
Records the number of cytology slides stained per day in the Cytology Stain Log.
Send out slides and blocks when requested by outside facilities.
Maintains CAP required logs and policies.
Demonstrates knowledge of use of standard precautions, safety practices, and hazardous waste management of materials used in the Pathology Department.
Demonstrates knowledge of use of Pathology specific equipment, reagents, and solutions.
ATTENDANCE AND RELIABILITY: Does not abuse or take advantage of sick time.
Regular attendance is a necessity.
Reports to work as scheduled and is able to complete all functions of the job.
