The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Engineer, for California Product Development provides strategic guidance and operational support to sites including, Santa Fe Springs, Irvine, Palo Alto, Long Beach, other occupied buildings. The professional functioning in this capacity will be an initiative-taking and dynamic self-starter who will achieve results by implementing the organizations improvement strategies in partnership with Ford Product Development, Ford NAPD Safety Organization, and Ford Environmental Quality Office. Effective hazard identification skills, risk mitigation tactics, technical and regulatory environmental support, and strategies within a non-manufacturing product development will be required in the successful execution of the EHS professional's roles and responsibilities.
This position reports directly to the Product Development Program Manager, with a matrix reporting relationship to the NA Product Development Safety Manager and NA Environmental Quality Office Environmental Compliance Engineer. They will work in coordination with the lead Product Development Corporate Sr. Safety Engineers.
Support Processes, Programs and Support Systems:
EHS Engineerswill provide support in the identification/development of safety procedures related to technologies in High Voltage products. In addition, provide general support associated with communicating, enabling, and implementing safety actions plans and improvement strategies. Effective communication, human interaction and relationship building skills will be critical to successful execution of a broad-based loss control process.
Verify Hazard Controls and Manage Risk
EHSEngineerswill drive process integrity through extensive use of direct verification of the mechanisms, procedures, systems, and activities used to control employee interaction with hazards. Provide technical guidance and support to increase the skills and effectiveness of employees in hazard identification and risk management techniques with the goal of eliminating employee fatalities, reducing the severity and potential for employee injuries while building controls to effectively manage risk.
Technical and Regulatory Environmental Support
EHS Engineerswill provide day-to-day technical and regulatory support for environmental media/operational subjects (air, water, waste, materials, ISO 14001, plant reports, decommissioning, remediation, permitting, regulatory communications, testing, plant audits, spill response, etc.). Prepare required regulatory reports and respond to any government agency inquiries and compliance issues (Emission Calculations for Paint Booth Records for South Coast AQMD, Refrigerant Management/Training, NESHAP Notifications, RICE MACT, Cold Cleaners, waste management with CALEPA, etc).
Additional Responsibilities:
Consultant on technical / non-technical safety/environmental topics, including local and national safety/environmental regulations.
Coordinate and drive continuous improvement in environmental, health and safety programs and sustainability opportunities.
Demonstrate knowledge and ability to take immediate action if an "imminent risk of serious injury" has been identified and/or an environmental incident occurs.
General support for the Safety Operating Systems and the Environmental Operating System.
Effectively communicate new initiatives, standards, significant incidents, internal and external stakeholders
Lead and/or participate in incident investigations.
Provide oversight for environmental, health and safety training and orientation.
Conduct appropriate audits and assessments as required.
Consult effectively with medical facilities, fire, and security functions.
Consult effectively with external statutory authorities, including but not limited to OSHA, CALEPA, EPA, and local government.
Submit reports and supports requests required from property lease agreements.
Understand battery technology and emerging environmental compliance/regulation as it is developing.
Support Machinery and Equipment Design Reviews and/or buy-offs.
Review site projects, attend projects' associated meetings (i.e.: design, demolition, etc) and provide direction that supports health and safety, environmental compliance and sustainability.
Utilize environmental software applications (Gyant, GEM, IPOINT, SharePoint, Maximo Lite, etc.) to help achieve business plan objectives and targets.
Operational knowledge of corporate safety and environmental programs.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
Strong oral and written communication skills
Strong interpersonal, negotiation and persuasion skills.
Candidates should have a Bachelor's Degree in Safety or Engineering with preference of a Graduate's / Master's level degree in Chemical, Environmental or Mechanical Engineering degree
Work experience of at least 5+ years with direct responsibility for all aspects of safety and/or environmental management in a manufacturing or non-manufacturing environment
Experience related to HV batterytechnology and process to electric vehicle or battery integration.
