Experience in career services, human resources, or employment recruiting
Experience with teaching and advising
Experience working with career services management (CSM) software (e.g., Symplicity, 12twenty, Handshake)
Experience with public speaking, creating presentations, and facilitating events/workshops
Experience with developing course materials (e.g., syllabi, assignments, LMS courses) and policies OR experience collecting data, working with Excel, and creating reports. Job Description: The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) Career Services is seeking qualified applicants for a Career Advisor role. This position will teach 5-7 sections of LAS's career preparation course, currently known as LAS 2030: Personal Career Preparation, per year (i.e., 2-3 each fall/spring and 1 in summer/winter). LAS 2030 is a requirement for all LAS undergraduate students; the course's learning goals focus on helping students to define and manage their professional career goals and to seek out and apply for experiential learning opportunities such as internships.
The Career Advisor will also provide one-on-one and group career advising to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as alumni, from over 50 different majors and programs with a wide variety of career goals. Group advising can occur in many settings including classroom/student organization/learning community presentations, workshops/webinars, and panels. Advising topics include all parts of the career development process from career exploration to negotiating salary offers. The Career Advisor will need to be aware of career and workforce trends, job seeking tools, and recruitment best practices to support students' comprehensive career development. They will also need to be able to navigate conversations about identity in the career space and support students from all backgrounds (e.g., class, race, gender identity, nationality) in their unique experiences and aspirations.
In addition to supporting general office operations (e.g., career fairs and events, CyHire (career services management tool) operations, committees, student interns), each career advisor is also in charge of a particular collateral project. The current options available are:
Project Option 1: Graduation & Internship Outcomes Data Management - Collect career outcome data for the 1.7K+ LAS graduates (undergraduate and graduate) each year. Manage and manipulate data in CyHire and Excel VBAs. Create statistical reports to help meet accreditation needs, provide insight into effectiveness of programs and trends in graduates' career pathways, and inform university-wide decision-making around student initiatives. Devise ways to strengthen quantity and quality of data on student internship outcomes in order to inform career advice and programmatic efforts.
Project Option 2: Internships for Credit, Unpaid Internship Scholarship - Oversee and serve as instructor of record for courses (i.e., LAS 298, LAS 498, LAS 499) that allow students to register internships and/or co-ops for academic credit. Maintain detailed records of application and placement data in CyHire. Design and enforce course policies in a fair yet inclusive manner. Develop and maintain course syllabi, assignment descriptions, and/or Canvas courses to ensure courses prompt reflection on growth and transferable skills learned. Also manage timeline, application process, application review, and publicity efforts for the LAS Unpaid Internships scholarship in collaboration with the LAS Scholarship Coordinator, distributing funds in an equitable manner.
The successful candidates will possess excellent written and verbal communication, facilitation, interpersonal, problem solving, attention to detail, and multitasking skills. The candidates will be able to prioritize multiple ongoing tasks concurrently and build professional relationships with employers, students, faculty, alumni, and staff. They will need to be able to work effectively on a small team with interconnected roles and responsibilities.
This position is eligible for Iowa State University's WorkFlex program and will have the opportunity to work remotely up to 40% of the time. Multiple positions are available. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship.
