Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Associate Director of the Career Development Center and led by the Assistant Director of Career Education & Counseling, the incumbent provides equitable and inclusive individual and group career planning, internship advising, career counseling and mentorship, to students and alumni. Resolves complex career counseling problems and develops appropriate courses of action with minimal supervision. The Career Counselor promotes career education throughout the campus by consulting with colleges, departments, faculty, staff and student groups to enhance career education and enable students to thrive in the workforce of the future.
Furthermore, the incumbent provides services that are equitable, inclusive, and culturally sensitive to enhance the quality of campus life. This position uses a student-centered and equity-minded approach in all communication and service efforts.

Key Responsibilities
Individual & Group Career Counseling: Responsible for career counseling and employment assistance to students and alumni. The counselor is expected not only to be a specialist in an assigned academic college but also a generalist in other areas and aspects of career planning, internship, and recruitment.
Career Education Presentations and Programs: Promotes career education throughout the student experience with consultations with colleges, departments, faculty, staff and student groups within the Division of Academic and Student Affairs that enhance the career education for all students.
Liaison with Employers: Contacts and maintains a close liaison with Deans, Department Chairs and faculty members within assigned areas of responsibility to communicate career services and opportunities for partnerships and collaborations.

Drop-In Services: Counsels and advises undergraduates, alumni, faculty and other visitors on a drop-in basis.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of counseling theory and job market trends across a wide variety of occupations as it applies to career development highly preferred. Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships, communicate clearly and effectively with community members, students, staff, peers, administrators, campus and University personnel, clients, state officials, vendors, professionals, and management. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint on a PC Computer. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and maintain a positive and respectful attitude. Ability to exercise sound time management skills and control of projects and work pro-actively to mitigate delays, address problems and any additional complication that may jeopardize operations of unit and or cases. Ability to oversee, organize and demonstrate command of a complex and continuously changing array of information, dates, places, and people in a systematic way to optimize efficiency and minimize duplication of effort in the process of completing projects.
Ability to make independent decisions and exercise sound judgment and handle confidential matters with tact and diplomacy, and to maintain confidentiality of information as needed or to protect the rights of individuals or the University.
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
Education and Experience
Equivalent to a bachelor's degree with upper or graduate coursework in counseling and guidance, human relations, or related fields and three years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required.
Master's in counseling or student Personnel highly preferred.
Desirable qualifications include either National Board Certification in Career Counseling or California Registry as a Professional Career Counselor.
Minimum of 2 years of experience in outreach and community relations with proven experience building and sustaining partnerships preferred.
Minimum of 2 years of experience working with programs that serve a diverse student population, low-income first generation, international, veterans and other underrepresented or educationally disadvantage student groups preferred.
Ability to work evenings and or weekends.

Physical Summary
Light work - Job involves some lifting of medium weight objects (10-20 pounds) and/or 10% - 20% of the job involves standing or walking.
Licenses / Certificates
Possession a valid California Driver's license is required to drive to various events/program/meeting sites. Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on University business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.
Hiring Range:The hiring range for this position is $5,276 - $6,128 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.
CSU Classification Salary Range:The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $5,276 - $7,517 per month.

Time Base
1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.
Duration of Appointment
This is a temporary position for one year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
