Position Summary:
As the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), you will hold a pivotal role in steering the financial landscape of the
union. Directly overseeing the finance, accounting, travel, and procurement systems, you will lead a team
of 7 finance professionals, including directly managing the controller and purchasing manager. In this
dynamic leadership position, you will report to the Executive Director, and be entrusted with managing
both strategic and tactical responsibilities for the entirety of the union's financial operations.
As a key member of the senior leadership team, you will collaborate closely with the Union's executive
leadership to develop, manage, and report on the annual budget. Your strategic insights and financial
acumen will play a crucial role in aligning financial strategies with the overall goals and mission of the
union. Additionally, you will ensure the accuracy and compliance of all financial transactions with relevant
laws, regulations, and union policies.
Your purview will encompass a spectrum of financial functions, including but not limited to accounts
payable and receivable, payroll, expense reimbursement, budgeting, member union leave, and
comprehensive financial reporting.
In essence, as the CFO, you will be a catalyst for financial excellence, ensuring that the union's fiscal
operations reflect its mission, comply with regulations, and contribute to its overall success. This role
demands a strategic thinker, adept manager, and a collaborative leader capable of navigating the
intricate financial landscape of a dynamic union.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversee Comprehensive Financial Operations: Direct and manage all facets of the union's
financial operations, encompassing accounts payable and receivable, payroll, expense
reimbursement, budgeting, member union leave, and the production of accurate financial reports.
Strategic Budget Development and Management: Collaborate with the senior leadership team to
develop, manage, and report on the annual budget, ensuring alignment with organizational goals
and mission.
Maintain Regulatory Compliance and Accuracy: Ensure that all financial transactions adhere to
relevant laws, regulations, and union policies, upholding the utmost standards of financial integrity
to guarantee accuracy.
Team Management for Operational Excellence: Lead, manage and further develop the finance
team, fostering a collaborative environment for operational excellence.
Timely Financial Reporting: Produce precise and timely financial reports, including income
statements, budget documents, balance sheets, and cash flow statements, to provide transparent
insights to union leadership and members.
Financial Policies and Procedures Oversight: Develop and uphold robust financial policies and
procedures for the union, ensuring strict adherence by both staff and members to uphold financial
governance standards.
Strategic Financial Guidance: Provide strategic financial guidance to the union's leadership team,
offering insights and recommendations to the President, Treasurer, and Board of Directors.
Investment Portfolio Oversight: Manage the union's investments by monitoring performance and
ensuring strict compliance with investment policies, maximizing returns while mitigating risks.
Collaboration with External Partners: Collaborate with external vendors and service providers,
such as banks, insurance providers, and accounting firms, to ensure seamless meeting of the
union's diverse financial needs.
Qualifications:
As an ideal candidate for the CFO role, you will possess a combination of the following characteristics
and qualifications:
Commitment to Mission: A demonstrated and unwavering commitment to the mission and values
of SEIU, showcasing an understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities associated
with the organization.
Educational Background: A Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or
a related field. Alternatively, significant and relevant professional experience may be considered
in lieu of a degree.
Professional Experience: A minimum of 7-10 years of hands-on experience in financial
management, budgeting, and forecasting, with a preference for experience within a union or
complex non-profit organization.
Financial Expertise: Strong knowledge of accounting principles and practices, coupled with
hands-on experience utilizing various financial software and systems.
Problem-Solving Skills: Excellent problem-solving skills, showcasing the ability to identify,
analyze, and resolve financial issues, coupled with a knack for developing creative and strategic
solutions.
Team Leadership and Development: Proven experience in building and leading teams, with a
track record of developing staff to their full potential.
Effective Communication Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the
ability to articulate complex financial information in a clear and concise manner to non-financial
stakeholders.
Collaborative Mindset: A demonstrated willingness and ability to collaborate seamlessly across
multiple departments throughout the organization, with a track record of successfully completing
cross-functional projects.
Benefits:
The salary range for this position is $140,919 to $178,307. SEIU Local 1000 employees enjoy top notch
benefits including fully employer-paid family health, dental and vision insurance; a generous leave
package; fully employer-paid defined benefit pension plan; 401(K); flexible savings accounts for annual
health and childcare expenses. This position will be hybrid, requiring some in-office days in Sacramento
with the flexibility of some work from home days each week.
