Collegiate Assistant Professor, Clarinet

Details of the offer

Job Description
The Music program within the School of Performing Arts at Virginia Tech (SOPA) (www.sopa.vt.edu) seeks a Collegiate Assistant Professor of Clarinet for an academic year (9-month) appointment with an initial term of three years beginning August 10, 2025. The Collegiate Assistant Professor will assume a 3:3 teaching load and duties that include teaching applied clarinet at the undergraduate level. Teaching duties, determined by the needs of the department and the candidate's strengths, will also include classroom teaching, such as music theory or sight-singing and aural skills, or online courses in music general education. Other duties include recruiting and maintaining a studio of undergraduate music majors and collaboratively recruiting with the woodwind area. The candidate will also be expected to develop strong relationships with school music programs, local youth ensembles, private instructors, and to serve on department/college committees. We seek candidates with the demonstrated potential to contribute effectively to a faculty team and are dedicated to creating a positive, dynamic, and inclusive learning environment for an increasingly diverse student population.

The collegiate faculty rank is a non-tenure-track position that offers a clear promotion path with increasingly long-term contracts. Collegiate faculty have a primary commitment to the instructional mission of the program, including undergraduate teaching, curricular and program development, and the design and integration of innovative and inclusive pedagogy. At Virginia Tech, Collegiate faculty are full members of the department faculty and are expected to teach and mentor students, perform research and/or creative scholarship, and participate in department and professional service.

The School of Performing Arts (SOPA) joins the School of Architecture, School of Design, and the School of Visual Arts in comprising the College of Architecture, Arts, and Design (AAD), which launched in July 2022. SOPA offers programs in music, theatre, and cinema at the graduate and undergraduate level. Programs are delivered in Virginia Tech's Creativity and Innovation District, which concentrates 11 performance spaces within a three-block area on the Blacksburg campus. Performance venues range from the 1,300-seat Moss Arts Center to a 101-seat experimental theatre.
